President Obama and his Blackberry: Keeping It Real

C'mon, when you heard President Obama was getting to keep his Blackberry, albeit a hyper-locked down and secured device with a tightly limited number of people gaining access, you wondered just what the Leader of the Free World might be typing.... well didn't you?

Today's LA Times brings us a look into this private and exclusive world. Guess what? Obama gets political spam and enjoys his morning Starbucks, just like me! :smileywink:

On a more serious note, how is Obama's Blackberry different from the one you use? So far, there's no real evidence that it is. Your Blackberry already has encryption available, you just need to enable it. You can also work with your IT administrator (if it's a corporate-issued device) if you want to restrict features, restrictions such as we've heard are in effect for the Prezzy's copy: no forwarding of emails and no attachments can be received.

Probably the most impactful method being employed by #44 is to limit those with the email address. With just a very select few of insiders and top government officials even having the address, Obama's Blackberry should remain secure, at least for a while. What doesn't change is the incredible target it represents both to hackers and terrorists, just knowing it exists. If they can't attack the Blackberry directly, they may try to get there via the accounts of the few known buddies on that short list of address-holders. People like David Axelrod, Rahm Emanuel, etc. Those are the people whose accounts, handhelds and computers should be under greatest defensive security measures.
