Welcome fredm
Did you have any anitvirus software installed on the laptop before you installed NIS? If you did, it may have conflicted with the installation of NIS.
If you did have something installed, you will have to fully remove it with the uninstall utility from that company.
Let us know what you had and what operating system you have and we will talk you through this.
This won't neccessarily help, but it's the only reference I can find and feel it needs to be logged so hopefully Symantec can look into this.
I work for a small IT repair firm and we have had 2 machines in for repair in the last week with this exact same issue. Both customers already had Norton, subscription ran out, renewed & installed NIS 2012 and then after the reboot to finish the install the Program Files folder is either empty or not there. One machine was Vista 32-bit (Program Files not even present), one was Win 7 64-bit (Program Files there, but empty). The only thing we could do was reinstall the O/S.
As I said, I thought I best mention it as it is something, albeit rare, is an issue with NIS 2012 that Symantec will need to look into.
