first off i use windows xp service pack 2
and i use norton 360
i dont really understand when u say Release and release too.
also... i didn't save the settings... nor do i know the way the settings were before.. i figure it should be in default mode. i didn't specify anything.
please help.
its killing me because i know my data is in there. i just need a way to convert it back or for norton to recognize it
OPen Norton Main Window.Go Help & Support, Go about Norotn 360, advise version. The first number indicates if you are using Norton 1 or 2.
Our of interest why did you not update to SP3?
Where did you get the "file" to reinstall Norton 360. Is it possible you downloaded a different version that before?
If I do not have the answer, then someone else will surely give some ideas shortly.
i have norton 360 1.2
i dont know what sp3 is
and im using my brother's version of 360. so it could possibly be a different version.....
I think that is your problem although as I only have version 2 of Norton 360 I cannot be 100%. Perhaps you have version 2 before your reformatted and now version1. It is possible that version 1 stores data in original format, whilst version 2 stores encoded.
I do not know what part of the world you are in; its 5:40 in London and later in the day, other continents will hopefully start responding and check this out.
SP3 is the latest release for XP.If you go in Internet Explorer to tools, windows update you can check what updates are available for your PC. You also may not have set this up for autormatic updates, which is perhaps why you are on SP2.
Anyway, dont worry I feel confident that you can restore your backup, and it looks like it was simply created with a different version.
Can you remember where you originally got or when you previously installed Norton prior to the reformat.
I would also go here and check your registrations. If it looks like you are registered for version 2 and 1, then that is further evidence that you were using version 2.
hello guys, my name is joe.
so let me get you up to speed. i just recently bought a new western digital external HD and backed up everything using norton's back up feature. i thought everything was fine until i reformated my pc and i tried to restore everything i stored.
so anyway. my External says i have 66 GB worth of data. which makes sense since thats what i stored. except that the files are in a completely different format. I figure thats fine since Probably this is just Norton's procedure.
so i try and restore and Norton doesn't recognize ny external HD. so i backed up the little files i have and they are in the Proper format (i.e, my music are in mp3 format. my word files are in the doc. extension etc)
so i think something went completely wrong and i lost everything enless you guys can help me out. i would Deeply appreciate any kind of help.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
here are some screens to help you out with what im dealing with
-------------------------------------------------
*NOTE*
the first image u see you'll see a "Drive C" folder.. thats from the second back up. and that one is formated the proper way.
I have not heard back from you but I have asked an expert to drop by as I need confirmation.
>>so i try and restore and Norton doesn't recognize ny external HD.""
This is the problem here. Did you reinstall N360 off a CD and /or was the Version of N360 the same one you had installed before you reformatted?
Can you backup to the External Drive using 360 now, in other words, does N360 recognise the External drive when you try to backup now, and if it does, can you restore these files? Try it and see, back up your favorites or a really small folder as a trial exercise and see if you can restore it straight away.
All I can suggest is that something happened in the reformatting process.
Can you try this and let us know, the backup is still there so we should be able to get a solution.
Edit: Run Live Update several times until there are no updates left, restart as prompted. Seems like you have an old version of N360v1 running, there were early bugs with the backup in 360v1 which were fixed towards the end, and even if you backed up with V1 you should be able to restore using V2.
Try the above and let us know.
Not to jump the gun, but I thinkt he answers are:
He does not know, save that the version now loaded is 1 and he borrowed this version from his brother.
Yes he can backup to the external drive but the format of the backup is raw i.e. an mp3 is saved as an mp3.
The N350 version 1 does recognise the external drive
Yes he probably can restore the mp3 trial backup made with version 1.
From my own files, I can say that Version 2 saves much as our poster has, i.e. now raw format.
I cannot remember version 1, but I suspect he saved with version 2 and now has version 1 installed and version 1 cannot recover version 2 backup files.
He has it the other way around I suspect, backup with version 2 and now unknowingly trying to restore with version 1.
Have to wait until the contributor returns (if he is State side he must have posted very late or is very early!)
sorry. i had to do something.
okay.
i think the logical thing is what cgoldman said.
i think i originally had and older version of norton 360 when i backed everything up. i reformatted, lost my copy of 360, Borrowed my brothers newer version. and now it doesn't read the older back up. I backed up a few files with the newer version and it backs up everything in the way it should be.
im right now in the process of getting my older version of 360 and seeing if that solves my problem.
Thanks. No problem I realise not everybody is a lunatic and on the forum day and night, ha ha !
If you have any problem with Norton 360 v2 let us know, there is an upgrade available from version 1. I tend in all events to recommend using the Norton Removal Tool and you should read the ADVISORY NOTE in this forum on the subject of uninstalling and reinstalling.
You could also download the trial and activate it with your product key. see for example this thread
but also note this from Tony free upgrade.
We await your findings. If it is resolved please do not forget to go back to this thread, let us know and click on solved against the solution.
cheers
At that point you should read all about the zombie issue and apply the workaround. The link is here zombie workaround That really is essential in Norton 360 v2. You might also get a shutdown problem and again there are 3 workarounds for that too. Start off with this link. Unfortunately, the zombie workaround affects some backup functionality but it is still possible to backup and restore even with the workaround. You just need to be fully aware.
P.S. I might then ask you for your help !
Cgoldman, u Really are the man!
thank you so much. it worked.
it looks like i Originally had 2.0 and i installed it and i was able to get all my Data back!
thank you again man
You are most welcome. Go back over my last post because I keep editing and updating when I find the links.
I am going to send you a PM (private message) just look out for messages which show up on the right hand top of the forum when you log in.
Glad this worked out for you, but I think many users who have backed up all of their important files with V1, then decide to upgrade to Version 2, will if we use this case as an example not be able to recover the backed up files, as they were backed up by a different Version of N360. I do not think this is correct, if you backup with N360V1, then upgrade to V2, your backups are recoverable. Although in this case it was the reverse, the same principles are involved.
Only thing I can think of here is that maybe when he installed V1 back onto the HD, he hadn't run Live Update to the latest updates for his V1.
No surely that does not follow. Backups with version 1 may well be recoverable with version 2. I have no idea but I never assume that it would not work. Nobody has reported an issue. In any event someone who has to recover having only backup version 1 available, would surely install version 1, recover, then upgrade to version 2.
I would not expect that if I backed up with version 2, and then decided to install version 1, or recover to a machine with version 1, that the recovery would work. Its clear I think that the format of backed up files are different in version 1 to version 2, so I do not think this is a liveupdate issue.
I see where you are coming from, but the example I used was that if someone does do the upgrade from V1 to V2, they would not (and should not have to) consider going back and reconfiguring the back ups first. It is the case that if you backed up using V1, then upgrade to V2, you are able to recover the backup.
As far as backing up with V2, then going back to V1, the data should be recoverable in just the same way. The reason I made reference to Live Update was that as I mentioned, in the early days of V1, there were backup issues which were resolved with patches available through Live Update.
After I look back over this thread, I still consider it to be a matter that the very early version of N360v1 "i have norton 360 1.2" joedaddy was using when trying to restore, didn't recognise his external drive. These were the problems resolved by the patches released later down the track forN360v1. I guess we'll never know for sure. Interesting thread, just the same.
The backup format of the orginial backup looks correct to me. Kindly post your operating system and release, and which vesion of Norton 360 and release too.
Make sure that the version of Norton 360 reloaded after the reformat of your hard drive is the same as before.
There is a small utility to backup the backup settings before you remove or uninstall Norton. By my information as you were not storing to Secure online storage it does not matter that you did not store your settings.
