Problem with browser "hang" on certain sites AFTER Norton 360 subscription renewal

Good morning.  After renewing my Norton 360 subscription (version 4.1.0.32), I am having consistent problems with navigating to certain web pages.  My browser (Firefox version 3.6.3) hangs for about 60-90 seconds when navigating to certain web pages (such as e-Bay log-in page, MSNBC main page, and many other pages); I have used Norton for a number of years and did not have this problem before the renewal. Some pages browse fine and fast, while others give me an hour glass for 60-90 seconds before finally downloading. Also, if I return to these web pages within the same browsing session, this problem does not occur, but if I re-start the browser, the same problem occurs every time.  For example, I just went to MSNBC.com and it took approximately 60 seconds for the main page to load.  The bar at the bottom indicated "transferring data from msnbcmedia3.msn.com" during the wait time (note:  I have a DSL connection, so this wait time in very unusual, and I was NOT experiencing this problem before the Norton 360 renewal).  Is there a setting that I need to change that could fix this problem?  Has anyone else reported this?  It has become so frustrating that I now avoid certain websites althogether.  Thank you in advance for your assistance with this problem!

Hi.  Thanks so much for responding.  I am having the problem with my Firefox browser...I don't really use Internet Explorer anymore, although I did launch IE today after your post, and I am not having that same problem with IE.  However, I do much prefer using the Firefox browser for a number of reasons, so I'm hoping to find a way to stop this problem with Firefox.  Firefox was fine before I renewed my Norton 360 subscription, so I think that there's something not compatible there.

I have cleared my cache/temporary internet files and in the Norton firewall program rules, Firefox is set at "allow".  Any other suggestions are most welcome as none of these actions have solved the problem with my Firefox browser so far.  Thanks in advance!

Close Firefox and delete the rule in the Firewall > Program Control for Firefox.  Then reopen Firefox and let N360 make a new rule for it.  See if the delays are still happening after resetting the Firefox rule.

Hi and thanks for your response.  As you suggested, I closed Firefox, removed the firewall program rule, and relaunched Firefox to allow Norton to rebuild the firewall rule.  Unfortunately, that did not work either,  as the same websites are hanging up.  Incidentally, someone at another forum mentioned having this problem and they said that  unchecking/disabling TLS protocal in Firefox helped them, but I tried that too, and it did not work for me (so I re-checked TLS).  Also, I tried re-setting the default user preferences through Firefox...still didn't help.  I'm running out of ideas / resources for help...  Anyway, thanks very much for your suggestions.  I will continue to check back in hopes that someone has another idea on how to fix this strange problem...

Hi ammie,

Have you tried clearing the FIrefox cache?  Click Tools > Clear recent history.  In the dialog box click the Details button and put a checkmark next to everything except Cookies and SIte Preferences,  In the Time range to clear menu select Everything, and hit Clear now.

HI...Yes, I have tried clearing the Firefox cache.  After reading your post, I just cleared it again, but that still didn't solve it.  Thanks for responding.

Hi ammie,

When you say that you renewed Norton 360 did you actually mean that you upgraded to version 4?  I am wondering if the Norton Antiphishing protection is causing this issue.  Try turning off this feature and reboot your PC.  Then try Firefox again and see if the problem persists.  Then re-enable Antiphishing.  Sometimes disabling/enabling a setting will reset things and fix this type of problem.  If you did install a new version over the previous copy these sorts of issues can sometimes arise.  If the Antiphishing tweak fails to work there are other things that can be tried.

Hi!  Good news and bad news...Turning off the antiphishing solved the problem!  However, turning it back on started the problem all over again.  At least the problem has been identified.  Thanks so much for that!!!!!!!!  I thought I was going crazy for a while.  Anyway, you are correct in that when I renewed my subscription, I upgraded to a new version of Norton 360 (version 4, I believe).  Any idea how I can permanently fix this antiphishing problem?  Can I turn off antiphishing without Norton turning red?  Your help is most appreciated...thanks very much in advance!

Hi ammie,

I do not use Norton 360 so I am not familiar with its settings but you can try the procedure here to see if there is an option in the Administrative Settings to ignore the Antiphishing status (I'm betting there is).  It is certainly possible that the installation of version 4 on top of the existing version is causing the problem.  If so, the most likely fix would be to uninstall Norton 360 using the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall.  Before embarking on that journey however, have you manually run LiveUpdate repeatedly until it tells you there are no further updates available?

Do you have Google Toolbar installed in Firefox?

If so, try to disable the Google Toolbar and re-enable the Norton Toolbar/AntiPhishing. You can also try disabling other toolbars from firefox annd check this. Let us know the results.
