Many times when I open performance or norton tasks, the graph idle time is divided by many lines and the word idle is also written many times. The next time the graph updates the idle time all comes together and all looks fine. I have a GIF image I'm trying to attach but I don't think it's going to work. If not use the direct link below to see example of what I mean. My computer is HP Pavilion with XP home sp3. It has Athlon 3200+ with 2.20 GHz. It had 2 GB of RAM and NVIDIA Ge Force FX 5200 video card. Using NIS version 17.1.1.09.
I could Restart my system and all of a sudden, I'll have 80 minutes of ' Computer Off' time in that graph, even though the actual Restart time is much less than 2 minutes ..
Thanks for replying Tech83. Yes I have the latest driver installed on my system. The problem is not always as bad as in the above image. Sometimes it's just a couple of lines in the entire graph. I experimented today. I uninstalled and took out my video card. I ran the computer with the onboard video memory. It's only 64 MB. The problem continued with that. I then put back in my video card and uninstalled NIS 2010. Used the removal tool twice after removing the program with add/remove programs. Then deleted two leftover program folders in application data. The opened regedit and deleted leftover norton key and the tool removal key. Then ran disk cleanup. Deleted all files. Than ran CCleaner and removed more files and quite a few Norton 2010 registry entries. Restarted computer and then re-installed NIS 2010. The problem still continues but not as bad. I found that if I tuen off my computer for a few minutes and then turn back on, most of the lines go away. I never shut my computer down as I have a weather station at my home and it is connected to computer with a program called Weather Display. It uploads data to the internet every 10 minutes. Anyway here are the results of what reinstalling NIS 2010 were.
Moderator... could you please change title of the message to "problem with graphs" instead of "why does this keep happening?" That was very stupid of me to do.
It's written in the first post of this thread... " My computer is HP Pavilion with XP home sp3. It has Athlon 3200+ with 2.20 GHz. It has 2 GB of RAM and NVIDIA Ge Force FX 5200 video card. Using NIS version 17.1.0.09. "
If you click on the 'Memory' tab when you see multiple instances of Idle time, does the graph display 'gaps' ie zero memory used that corresponds with the start of each of the those Idle time periods?
Yes there are lines in the memory graph too that corresponds with the gaps in the idle time. But if you look closely at the first graph, you will see that the lines extend even to the unidle time areas. Just look for missing blue lines. It hasn't been so bad since I reinstalled it but it still happens occasionally.
In my experience, the white 'Gap' that you see in the graph above never consolidates into an unbroken graph, regardless of how many times the window is closed and re-opened. The same applies to the 'Computer Off' and 'Log Off' events; the graph tends to mis-report the actual time elapsed for both of these events, more often than not. Potentially, Norton may not be accurately recording 'Fast User Switching' events properly on my computer, which may result in the problems that I'm experiencing with the graphs.
That said, though, I tend not to use the 'Performance' graph feature, at all, due to the fact that the 'System Insight' feature no longer records software/update installations for some unknown reason. Hence my assertion that the issue is a Norton problem.
I don't know elsewhere. It looks so similar to what is happening to me. My image below is a GIF animation and shows comparison of both memory and CPU with the missing. line. Now I am very much convinced this is a Norton issue.
