Problem with Safari

I am guessing the alert is from the firewall. It's doing what it was designed to do—when the product was setup, you evidently choose to be asked when somebody connected to your Skype. The firewall is supposed to monitor connections to your Mac and let you block unwanted connections. You can choose to allow all connections to Skype in the Norton firewall UI. Other services like file sharing are probably setup similarly. You can simply choose to allow anybody to connect to your Mac, but that's fairly insecure.

To answer the question about the uninstaller, you should be able to just run Symantec Uninstaller from /Applications/Symantec Solutions.  It will show which products you have installed, select any or all that you wish to remove.  Sorry for the problems.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes Safari opens normally (going to my default site), sometimes not. When will a fix be posted?

I too have had a few of these Safari crashes pointing to the WCDIEngine. I'm using Internet Security, the Norton Antivirus version is 11.1.2, the Norton Confidential 1.3.3, the Norton Firewall version 4.1.1 and LiveUpdate is version 5.1.2.

The two crashes so far have been random and they have happened when I first launch safari. Both crashes have occurred before Safari can load my default homepage.  Attached are the two Safari crash reports.

Hopefully these crash reports will be of help in troubleshooting the issue.

The best, Tom

To temporarily fix this issue, anybody that has this problem can move this file:

/Library/Application Support/Symantec/SymWebKitUtils/WebFraud.plugin

to another folder (such as your Desktop). This will prevent the problematic component from loading. We are trying to reproduce this crash, but so far have had no luck. Sorry for the problems and we appreciate your patience as we look into this.

Do NOT delete this plugin, otherwise you will have to re-install when we do release a fix.

Thanks,

Ryan

Still having the problem after the recent Safari update. When will a permanent solution be available?

I can't speak about dates since it's policy not to comment on unannounced products. But I can say without breaking any rules "very soon".

However, you will need to undo the steps I outlined above, for those of you that have done that.

I forgot to post about this, but we released an updater 2 weeks ago that should fix the issues reported here (the browser crashing when opening it). If you disabled the browser support for the Norton products using the instructions I posted above, please make sure all components are in their proper place and run LiveUpdate. If you haven't done so already.

Sorry for the problems and hope this fixes the issues.

I have been having the same problem with my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I am using Safari 5.04 and the WCID engine crashes it regularly. It is now happening to my wife on our Power Mac running Leopard and Safari 5.04. She was having crashes using Safari 4 but the error window never identified the cause. I upgraded to 5.04 hoping to alleviate the problem, It still happens but now the error window ID'd the WCID engine.  I am considering removing the Symantec software from my computers but I see that it is used for anti phishing duties. Can I disable the anti-phishing activity to stop the crashes while leaving the balance of the Norton's protection in place?

Make sure you have WCIDEngine 3.1.2. This is the version that contains the fix. The crash reports should contain the version of WCIDEngine.bundle.

Ryan

I have no idea how to see what WCID engine I may have. I have the most updated software available. I have found by disabling Norton confidential the crashes have stopped.

How can I see the WCID engine in my computer?

Jim

In the Finder, navigate to /Library/Application Support/Symantec/WCID/WebFraud. Then perform a Get Info on the "WCIDEngine.bundle". That'll bring up a new window that should have the version information.

Step by step instructions:

1. In the Finder, select "Go to Folder..." from the View menu.

2. Copy and paste:

/Library/Application Support/Symantec/WCID/WebFraud

and press the "Go" button.

3. In the window, click "WCIDEngine.bundle".

4. Then select "Get Info" from the File window.

Look at the "Version" field in the Get Info window. It should say "WCIDEngine 3.1.2f2, © 2009 Symantec Corporation, All Rights Reserved."

Ever since I downloaded Norton from Comcast about a month ago, I've been having 2 problems:

1. Safari has been crashing frequently, with this error message: "The application Safari quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the WCIDEngine plug-in." It doesn't matter what website, or if I just got onto Safari, or if I've been on awhile.

2. Mail keeps putting emails in the wrong box. It used to work right, but now Junk emails end up in the Inbox, and good emails go to the Junk – but not consistently. It does some right and some wrong.

None of this happened before I started using Norton. Help!

1. The first problem sounds like the issue that we fixed a couple months ago. Make sure you have the correct version of WCIDEngine, as noted in the steps right above your post.

2. I don't see how this could be our fault, since we do absolutely nothing with Mail.app. We do not monitor email traffic, and we don't load into Mail.app at all at this time.
