I have NIS 2012 on my WinXP SP3 computer which is fully up to date. I use this site fairly often and access to this site has been no problem. However in the last few days it opens then freezes so I can't use it. It gets as far as "done" one bar shows in the progress panel and then it stops. The cursor arrow turns into an hourglass if I try to scroll and thats it. It will close but takes its time using the Windows non-respnse closure box which comes up. The screen goes white and I have to close that in the same way. This is the only site where it freezes like that. Every other website is fine. I have tried no add-ons without good result.
Now I find that when I do a Google search and click on the results Norton Safe Web icon for a full report I get the report for a few seconds then that window goes white but will close as normal.
It seems to be just Norton things that are affected. Is it possible there is a connection with NIS 2012 - we've been having the update problem which I had at first and posted on this site but am now OK. But I am still getting constant email notification as new postings on the same subject go up to the extent that I delete them now as they are so prolific, I had 26 one time but the site was accesible then. Strangely if I access with the email notification it goes to the posting which can read but it is a frozen screen.
I am using my wife's laptop to post this. Any views?.
A couple of days ago there were some cosmetic changes made to the Norton forums website. Many users are reporting that they are experiencing slow page loading, delayed scrolling etc. The issue is being investigated, but it appears to some of us that the site issues could be due to an increased number of scripts on each page. Is the computer you are having the problems with an older PC? If it is a little behind the times in processor speed and available RAM, the demands of running additional scripts may be too taxing for the poor thing - I have had this problem on this site with a very old Mac that I occasionally dust off.
Many thanks, SendofJive. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel better now. You could say I've got an older PC. It's XP SP3 Home Edition Version 2002 (although I bought it new in 2005) I have Intel Pentium4 CPU 2.93GHz and 2.49 GB RAM.
While my computer is struggling to open the Norton Community site I do sometimes get Norton Performance alerts about high CPU performance but it never gets there and after watching the frozen screen for a while I get fed up and try to close it and it then struggles to close with new alerts about Windows Error Dumping ()or something like that) before it closes.
The rest of my computer is absolutely fine and if these cosmetic changes are interfering lets hope somethig is done and there is a bit more attention to functionality rather than fancy bits and pieces.
Once again I am having to use this site from my wife's Win7.
From the specs you give, your PC should not be having these sorts of issues with this site - slow loading, yes - freezes, no. Is it only this site? How about YouTube - any problem with Flash videos?
Another Guru has just informed if I turn off compatibility mode, that will speed up the Forum. I would try it also with Safe Web. I have just been trying it and it certainly does help with the freezing up and the slowness of this Forum. I'm on IE 8 and I turned off compatibility mode for this Forum just a few minutes ago and I can now post again. Please try this and let us know if this has helped you also.
As I mentioned previously Safe Web appears to have cured itself. The Forum is still playing up though. As for Compatibility Code with the Forum I only have a URL shortcut to that and there is no Compatibility Mode feature with that. The only Compatibility Mode tab I seem to have in XP is in "properties"of .exe files and as I have never used Compatibility Mode at any time wouldn't they all be switched off anyway? I have no experience with this and thought I could only switch back to a previous Windows version by switching it on. I wondered if you could walk me throough the procedure you mention - I should be very grateful if you could as I obviously a dummy with this.
Further to the above - I've found what you mean now. You have Compatibility View under Tools in IE8 - my wife has that on her Win7 which is off already by default I presume because we haven't touched it. I don't have that with IE7. The reason I have IE7 is because I upgraded to IE8 when it came with a Windows Update. I had a few glitches which didn't happen with IE7 so I went back to IE7 which suited me fine ever since until the problem with this site a few days ago. I've haven't tried IE9 because I've seen opinions about IE9 seeming to suggest that it iis more targetted towards Windows Vista and above but I don't know if that is true..
I might just have to live with this Forum being inaccessible from my XP because NIS 2012 works well on it and I can access it from my wife's Win7.
For security reasons you should try IE 8 again. I got used to it the second time around. I also use xp pro and IE 8. A lot of us had compatibility mode turned on for this Forum because of other problems with the Forum. These problems seem to be fixed now and I find no need now for having the compatibility mode turned on for this site.
FYI: We cannot use IE 9 with xp. It is only for Vista and above.
Sorry about the delay in letting you know but your suggestion about upgrading to IE8 was the answer. No problem with this site now. Thank you very much.
I am glad that the site is working for you now and that you have updated to IE 8. Please make sure that you also got all the latest updates for IE 8. Can you also mark this thread as solved by clicking on the post which gave you the answer? This way others with a similar problem will be able to find the solution. Thanks.
