Problems with recent update

Hello all!

I just returned from vacation and received a prompt to restart my computer so NIS 2009 updates could be installed.  After restarting, my computer desktop was changed to the default image from when I bought the computer and all of my desktop icons had been rearranged.  I thought this was pretty strange, and decided to look around and see if anything else had been changed.  All of my Firefox (v3.0.13) bookmarks were gone and my homepage had been reset to the default.  All of my Word 2003 documents are gone, including my resume.  I had some save games for various videogames, and those are gone, but the games themselves are still installed.  My iTunes library is completely gone and has been replaced by bands I've never even heard of.

I read about the problems people are having with the new patch, but nothing sounds like the problems I'm currently experiencing.  I never received a "Symantec Service Framework" error.  NIS 2009 says I am running 16.5.0.135 and LiveUpdate says there are no patches for me to download.  I tried a system restore for yesterday, but when XP (Media Center addition v. 2002 service pack 2) restarts I get a message saying that the restore can't be performed because no changes have been made to my computer.

I apologize if this has already been addressed or if I am not posting in the correct location.  I'm not terribly computer literate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
