Program files (x86) Microsoft office root files backup failed

Issue abstract: What causes some files not to backup?

Detailed description: There are only 19 items failing. All items that failed to backup are showing as “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft office\Root<this section varies>.dll”

Product & version number: Norton 360 Premium (can’t find my “version number”)

OS details: Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, version 10.0.19045 Build 19045

What is the error message you are seeing? “Some files were not backed up. Please make sure that all other running programs are closed and then try again.” Yet nothing else is running according to my Task Manager.

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

Daniel, is “Microsoft Office click to run (sxs)” showing in task manager? If so stop the task and retry.

MS Office click to run (sxs) was showing. I stopped it and re-ran the backup… even more items were not backed up this time - over 70 items now. All the same Program Files; the new items all appearing to be Norton-specific items.

You usually can’t backup the Office root directory directly because most backup systems are designed to prevent accidental backups of critical system files, and the root directory where Office is installed is considered a sensitive system location; attempting to back up from there could potentially disrupt your system functionality or lead to data corruption.

Key reasons why backing up the Office root directory might be restricted:

  • Security concerns:

Allowing direct backups from the root directory could expose sensitive system files to potential misuse or accidental deletion.

  • System stability:

Modifying files in the root directory can sometimes interfere with crucial system processes, potentially causing instability.

  • Best practices:

Most backup software encourages users to back up specific data folders within the Office directory, rather than the entire root directory, to ensure a targeted and safe backup strategy.

What to do instead:

  • Backup specific Office folders:

Navigate to your Office documents, templates, and other user data folders within the Office directory and select them specifically for backup.

  • Use dedicated Office backup tools:

Some third-party backup solutions might offer features specifically designed to back up Office data while mitigating risks associated with the root directory.

  • Check your backup software settings:

Ensure that your backup software is configured to exclude the Office root directory by default, and only include the necessary user data folders.
