PSAPI.DLL error can't access Norton One Click Support

I recently tried to download IE8.  I never got a chance to install it b/c my PC froze and I had to restart. Afterwards, every time I restart, I keep getting an error message "GetProcessImageFileNameW" error in psapi.dll.  I don't see any obvious damange to my system except that I can no longer run IE, Windows Live Messenger, or Norton's One Click Support.  I was trying to post this issue directly through Norton's One Click Support, but couldn't so I had to resort to this forum, which I hope someone can help me.

I did some research on the internet and found that is error is related to IE7.  Supposedly it can be fixed by installing a new psapi.dll file.  I tried it but it didn't work. I also tried visiting the Windows Update page hoping to find a solution, but I couldn't even load the page on Firefox since Windows Update website requires IE.  Does anyone know if this error is related to a virus? How can I fix it?

Hi capoeira4u,

What is the Norton program that you are running? Can you post back with the version number as  well?

Thanks,

Symantec Corporation

Using Norton Internet Security 2009 which I bought and installed just 2 weeks ago.  The version no. is 16.5.0.135

By the way, since I installed NIS it won't let me access my Norton account. It keeps saying "We are unable to proceed with Norton account at this time.  Please try again later."

I'm really considering reformatting my PC to get of these problems, but only if it's the last resort.  Please help me.  Thanks.

Two things to try:

1)  Did you try to unregister and register the dll file using regsvr32.exe /u ?

2)  Do you have System Restore functioning?  If so,  You could uninstall NIS2009 and then use SR to go back before the IE failed install.  That should fix the IE issue.  Then uninstall NIS2009 or Run the Norton Removal Tool ( found here ) and then reinstalling NIS2009.

Let us know how you fair with this, please.

I tried everything already but didn’t work.  Anyway I just reformatted my WinXP and now everything is working just fine. I can use One Click Support, access my Norton account, and my Norton taskbar icon is now back.

Glad you got it fixed for you!  Sorry it took a OS install to fix it but that happens sometimes.  If anything else comes up, please visit and post again.  Help is here 24 / 7.  Solutions takes a little work though. <g>
