I wonder if anyone can help or give their views re the above virus? I think I got it from a communal memory stick. However I am upset that my Norton 360 never protected me from it. I've been at it for ages trying to get rid of it using Norton virus scan, Norton Power Eraser, MalwareBytes and an adware cleaner. I ended up with a remote session with a Norton operative but all he did was run a quick scan with my Norton 360 and then proceded to advise me that the only way to get rid of this virus ( which seems to return every time I think I;ve got rid of it and keeps on multiplying and changing ) was to use a paid Norton service costing £68! Norton 360 doesn't even seem to be able to detect the virus but MalwareBytes does.
I really don't understand why I have to pay extra for something I thought I was protected against and I asked the operative if he knew if Norton were aware of this virus, which looks to me to be a very serious one, but all he could say was that different antivirus products behave differently and that Norton were always seeking ways of keeping their product up-to-date.
So two things really :
Does Norton know of this virus and if so why doesn't the Norton 360 protect my computer from it?
Does anyone know of a easy way of getting rid of rid of this complicated virus ( I am not a techy unfortunately ) ?
Thankyou if you can help or give a view and if needed I can attach a MalwareBytes log file which shows all the virus and it's multiples.

The term PUP suggests "Potentially Unwanted Program" which is sometimes downloaded as an add-on to a program you willingly download. This type of program Norton does not readily indentify as dangerous - as you permitted the download. This is sometimes an add-on while you are downloading a program you desire (you missed the check mark to stop the download). Basically Norton did not ID it, as you permitted the download.
That said, tied with the running opf NPE, MalwareBytes and an Adware cleaner, I am sure if we did refer you to the Malware Discussion Board, our resident Malware Removalist (Quads) will opt not to assist you. With that thought in mind and no one else here as qualified as he is to assist you I would suggest you go to a Malware Removal Forum for assistance.
Here are some places where a real malware expert can work with you one-on-one in real time to dig these things out. Some of our best folks here have checked them out to make sure that they are capable, and competent to deal with rootkits and other nasties. Most of them handle tricky Windows problems as well.
BTW - the above resources are free - please do not spend any money for hep when there is very good free help available. Although there may be many suggestions for removal available on the internet, only a qualified malware removalist will be able to remove and also stop the PUP from returning.

Hi Pooka
Try a MalwareBytes full scan in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu). Disconnect the internet before booting into safe mode as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan.
Thanks for the replies. I have continued my onslaught against this devil of a virus and after doing a full MalwareBytes scan in safe mode ( as suggested ) and also in normal mode, up till now my pc is performing pukka and there are no results showing any further problems. I have found ADWCLEANER ( a very good adware cleaner ) and MalwareBytes invaluable in scanning and finding any rogue elements. I'm crossing my fingers that the problem has now been eliminated but I will regularly scan my pc in the next few weeks to keep an eye on things.
I'm running Norton 360 with Windows 7 64-bit / IE10.
I saw OpenCandy detected on my PC a couple of weeks ago. I'm running MBAM and it detected it in a scan and removed several files with the same name.
I haven't seen any adverse effects after the removal. I run unattended overnight full system scans with Norton 360 and MBAM with no detections since the initial detection and removals.
When I saw the file names, I searched online about "OpenCandy" and I was less concerned about the effects on my PC after reading about it.
Thanks for the reassurance Scoop8. I read info on the virus and some said it was bad and some said it was not too bad. Trying to draw all what I did to solve the problem I continuosly used MalwareBytes, ADWCleaner, Norton Power Eraser and Norton antivirus scans and these seem to have solved the problem. I also found another wiz program from another post on here ( Microsoft Emergency Support Tool - msert.exe ) which I used to do a full scan of my pc ( it took over four hours! ) and nothing has been detected.
I'm going to tentatively say the problem is solved ( famous last words, lol ).
