Norton Security 2004 is so out-of-date that contemporary products probably aren’t in a position to deal with.  They can’t work in partnership and they can’t delete the program.  I doubt that it has the engine to deal with the kinds of problems we have today.  I hate to say it, but you should probably forget NAV 2009 and get NIS 2009.

So when you update that doesn’t keep it current with the new settings from Norton??

When you update your Norton via Live Up date all that is doing is updating your virus defention files which come out about 4 times a day. Its up to you to keep up on the product updates. Any software is like this. When Vista came out did you get an automatic download and install of it from XP. No. Norton is also sold in tons of stores amnd is advertised everywhere.

You really need to uninstalle 2004 first. After that it is safe to install v2009. Do you want the Norton firewall as well, because that’s not included in NAV2009

It is not advised here, i.e. on T.V.; maybe once-a-year I see it advertised, and, even then, it is reduced in price or with a Speical Deal.

Anyway, please Buy N.I.S. 2009, then follow these instructions:

01. Download the N.I.S. to your Desktop.

02. Dis-connect from the Internet.

03. Go to Add/Remove.

04. Locate "Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation)" and click on "Remove".

05. Follow the instrctions and, when asked to, re-start your computer.

06. Locate to Add/Remove upon start-up.

07. Click on LiveUpdate and "Remove" and any other LiveUpdate.

08. If requested, re-start your computer.

09. Double-click on the Saved N.I.S. File on your Desktop.

10. Follow the instructions.

11.  Open Norton Internet Security and "Run [Norton] LiveUpdate" manually.

12. It is now Safe to Connect to the Internet again.

13. If you notice things not running right with N.I.S. 2009, it may be a bug; please Post them here [in the Forum].

If you have any problems un-installing/installing, you may want to use the Norton Removal Tool.

Uninstall Security 2004 and keep the product key. I hear that Security evolved into Internet Security, so you may be able to use NIS2009 wihout an additional license.

Uninstalling 2004 will prevent potential conflicts with NIS2009. All av software download virus signitures, which another AV may detect as potential malware.

Keys migrate only from 2007, 2008 => 2009 products in the same product family.  (Or so we were told.  :smileyhappy:)

I believe the earliest is v2006

will running liveupdate on 2004 still obtain you updates? or did symantec stop?

Users with active subscriptions from 2006 or later product can update to the latest build of the same product.

Thats nice of you symantec. Microsoft has this 3 yr. sunset policy…
