Re: Fake Alert Virus

Can anyone please help me.  I believe my computer has been infected by the Fake Alert Trojan.  I ran Norton and it found it, now when it removed the virus it got rid of the pop-up alert.  But when I restarted the computer the desktop still has the WARNING dangerous spyware.  I have ran to other scans and nothing seems to fix the problem.  Now when I open up internet explorer I see warning in red at the top of the screen saying my computer has too many errors.  I am in the process now scanning it again with Norton Antivirus.  Can someone please help if possible.

Phil,

Sorry, I an running Norton Internet Security.  I orignally had McAfee when all this started but upon running their scan twice I could not find any thing wrong.  So I downloaded Norton Internet Security 2009.  Short of sounded stupid how do delete my system restore points and how do I run Norton in Safe Mode. The operating system is Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Hi niki,

No such thing as a stupid question around here.

Just click on these links for instructions:

Delete System Restore Points for XP

SAFE MODE

When you start your computer in Safe Mode, the screen will look very different, but that is normal. Then, just open your Norton Internet Security and run a full system scan. Once you restart the computer, it will be back in Normal Mode.

I don't know which method you used to uninstall McAfee, but you should run this Removal Tool to clean up any remnants left over by McAfee.

Keep in touch.

strange! mcafee artemis could not find the threat! if the file was suspicious…i hope you were using under subscription and using there security center 9.3…well…leave mcafee…here with norton just do what people are saying you are in hands of good helping hands.you can also use online scan of symantec.it’s effective and free.

Hi

1. Can you get a screenshot of when the "warning dangarous spyware" appears at restart??

2. Fake /rogue spyware will generally appear in an Hijackthis log. So you can use Hijackthis to create a log.

Phil,

I did everything you said. I ran the remove tool to make sure McAfee was gone, then I shut of my system reset and booted it up in Safe Mode and ran the virus scan twice.  When I rebooted it agin the below screen is still coming up.  When I ran the virus scan the only thing it found was a tracking cookie.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Additionally you can try scanning your PC with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware for example. The program is often recommended by some forum members.
