Re-installing Norton antivirus on-line

I have Norton antivirus on-line on my computer and it is working fine. the problem is my computer has a lot of issues and i wanted to do a system restore on my computer to restore it back to factory settings. my question is this: if i do a sytem restore, can i re-install norton antivirus on-line and still continue my subscription that i got from Century link, and if so....how do i do this cause i don't want to lose the antivirus i'm using now.

Norton keeps a record of I.P address when doing an update with a product right? i just don't want to do a system restore to my computer and lose lose my subscription that i got free from Century link.

thank you for you response

Can you tell us which of the Norton security programs you have? I have had a look at the Century Link website but it's not too clear. I know that COMCAST offer a version of Norton 360 which they call Norton Security Suite Can you click on Support / About and see if there is a Version ID which looks like nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number and whether it includes utilitys like PC Cleanup and not just the normal antivirus and malware protection?

What you do about reinstalling it would seem to be between you and Century Link -- what do they say about downloading and installing it again?

One thing to watch is that most new computers come with a trial free installation of a security product, often but not always Norton Internet Security, but whatever it is you need to both uninstall it in the usual Windows way AND run a special clean up tool that you can get from the website of the maker of the security program.

If you don't get rid of that and do the clean up it can mess up the installation of the next security program.

So we need some more information from you about all this. If you are not sure about what comes as a trial on your PC can you tell us the Make and exact detailed model number so we can look it up.

Thank you Katie Q for moving this to the correct spot.

OK, well the version i have is from a Quest cd that i got from them when i got internet from them. i think i'll take your advice Huwyrgr, i think i will call Century link and ask them if do a system restore can i continue with the Anti-virus version i have.

Also i will keep an eye open for the trial version that came with the computer. i understand i will have to un-install that product with a special tool...thank you for responding to my question, and i will reply back here about what Century link say's

Do let us know what you find out from Century ... it could help others.

Hi galaxy1,

You would not need to reinstall Norton after a system restore but it sounds like you are talking about a System Recovery. All you will need to do is reinstall Norton AntiVirus online from the CD-ROM disc that your ISP (Century Link) provided [or download it from their web site if that version is still available]. You will need the PIN number your ISP provided if you install it from the CD-ROM disc. When you connect to the Internet, the program will be verified through Norton. If you do not have or know your PIN number you can get it from your ISP or should be able to sign into your account on Century Link and get it there. Your subscription is through your internet provider and is a part of your service so you will not lose it.

You will also need to download the definitions by either letting Automatic LiveUpdate do it or running LiveUpdate manually, or  downloading Intelligent Updater and running it. LiveUpdate will also update the revision to the current version number.

Intelligent Updater:  http://www.symantec.com/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

If their is a trail version installed on your computer after the system recovery I would use the uninstall tool to remove it before reinstalling your ISP version.

Hi galaxy1,

Since you are doing a "system resotre to factory settings" (actually sounds like a recovery- but why split hairs).

As Hugh stated, you will need to be aware of a trial AV if any.  Pplease note which AV brand it is, as most of the different programs have different versions of removal tools for their own product.  Let us know which product is the trial and we will provide instructions for the removal.

I have done some research and it appears the info gkdiamond gave is not totally correct.  You can go to the following link,

http://qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/security-download-norton.html   find the download for your Norton On-line AV  (Home or Business)  and simply follow the steps as they apply to you.  They'll ask for your phone number as verification.  Once installed and activated you need to run LiveUpdate manually (rebooting as requested) until such time as LiveUpdate responds "no updates found".  Your subscription will continue per the agreement with Century.

Also be advised the Removal Tools listed in gkdiamond's post are for Norton products and will not remove other products if your trial happens to be other than Norton.

Please keep us posted and feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Hello yank,

I am not sure what you are referring to as incorrect. As I stated, galaxy1 can use the CD that he has to be sure that he gets the version that he specifically pointed out that he wants to continue using. Looking at the link you provided he will get version 20.1 (NAV 2013). If he is using NAV 2010, NAV 2011, etc. he will not get it using the Installer that you are pointing him to. I also stated that he could download it from Century Link's site if they still offer the version that he wants to continue using.

Also from the link that you provided:  "This CD requires an active activation pin that can be obtained from CenturyLink Technical Support." Which is a good indication that he will need a pin to use his CD-ROM disc.

The verification when connecting to the Internet after installation of Norton that I was referring to is the activation process not a verification to Century Link.

Perhaps I misread galaxy1's  intentions - it reads to me that galaxy1 desires to retain his subscription to Norton Online thru Century - not specifiing that they desire to retain the exact same version.

For some reason, I can not find any of the above information on the linked page I provided - I see nothing referring to the version of Norton Online, nor the CD requires a PIN statement, Where is this info coming from?  I agree it is probably v20 - which under my way of reading this initial post, would not effect their "ability to retain the subscription".

The verification when connecting to the Internet after installation of Norton that I was referring to is the activation process not a verification to Century Link.

Let's see what galaxy1 has to say about what his intentions are.
