I purchased a Norton product from a retailer and have been in email contact with Norton on installing it. I was told to send in my new product key and 365 days would be added to my current account which ends tomorrow. In view of the short amount of time left on my current account, I would just like to be reassured that this will be done automatically by Norton and I do not have to manually use the disc purchased? Many thanks for a quick reply!
If you have NAV or NIS you can click the "Renew" link visible on the user interface and you should see a link to enter a 'key' or 'code'. Click that link and enter the key from the new product you purchased. It will add the 365 (or 366) days onto your current subscription. Hope this answers your question.
I currently have Norton 360 - 1 day left! But have purchased Internet Security 2012 so the product key I have entered as you advised, is not being recognised. After reading the post by the person who used their Internet Security 2012 disc and had their hard drive wiped clean, I am now in a dilemma, as I do not want to risk that happening to me by using my disc!!
I am hoping that the emal I received from Norton help asking for my new product key, means that they will do it for me. I just need to be sure this is going to happen.
Freddles,
The other purchaser does not actually say he bought a disk and you will see that I've asked for clarification.
You cannot use the purchased NIS 2012 KEY to extend your N 360. Would you prefer to keep N 360 or would you like to replace it with NIS 2012 ?
If you really want to keep N 360 then unless your retailer will swap for you then get in touch with the Norton OnLine Support team via the CHAT link as below and ask if they can help you since they do have a 60 day warranty during which you can get a refund on your purchase even from a retailer and even if you had used the product which in this case you have not.
To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.
Feedback from users tells us that CHAT is good at resolving problems.
However if you would like to go to NIS anyway (it doesn't have the utilities that are in N 360 but I'm not crazy about them and prefer to concentrate on protection) but it has more settings the user can tweak if he wants to. For the moment it is more uptodate technology than Norton 360 V5 that is the current retail version -- although V 6 is on the stocks and you could upgrade to it for free when it is released.
If you want to go to NIS then you need to remove Norton 360 by uninstalling it in the usual way with the Windows Remove Programs and some people are finding that they can no longer see their CD drive -- but Microsoft knows about this problem and has instructions and a FixIt tool if it does happen.
You may also want to run the Norton Removal Tool which you can download from here:
This link Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the Symantec Norton Removal Tool and instructions on using it but I suggest you skip what it says about installing.
Then download a full install file for NIS 2012 from this link since it will be much more uptodate than any disk -- they are not updated from the first release of the product:
New NIS 2012: Click on this link -- NIS 2012
This will download a single file of around 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!
When you go to install from that file, if you have VISTA or Windows 7 I recommend that you start the install by right mouse clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as Administrator since I find it sometimes avoids some problems.
This file is not the absolutely latest version but is the current one for full download that Norton have made available to us -- until we hear otherwise! -- and so after you install it you should run Live Update several times with a restart inbetween until it tells you that you are fully uptodate and you end up with 19.5.0.145 which is the current update available through liveupdate.
Please let us know how you get on .... or if you have any queries.
Hi Hugh
Thank you for your informative reply.
I am still in a quandary as whether or not to do anything as I am not sure if it is already being done for me.
This is the response I got from Norton support,
On checking the records, I found that you have Norton 360 program which has only one day to expire. In order to resolve the issue, please reply us the product key of your new Norton Internet Security 2012 program. On checking the product key, we will add 365 days to your current Norton 360 program and you can use the backup feature.
It does sound as though they are going to take care of everything for me, but with so little time left, I would like to be sure.
I have been trying to get this situation resolved for a few days now, it was never my intention to leave it to the last minute.
I am assuming that the one day left covers tomorrow (8th Feb) and not ending at midnight tonight - I'd be too afraid to turn on my computer if I wasn't protected!
<< please reply us the product key of your new Norton Internet Security 2012 program. >>
DO THAT NOW!
These people are leaning over backwards to help you and if they say they will ADD 365 days I'm sure they will. Since you say NIS is cheapaer than N 360 I think you are very lucky so grab it!
You are not at risk if you turn on your computer and don't go anywhere on the internet or download and open email ....
Did it as soon as I got the email earlier today Hugh!
Just glad to know that you are reading it the way I am. I agree that they sound like a grand bunch!
If you don't see the Remaining days = 1 change go into Support on the main screen and click on Subscription Status (Those are the workds in NIS so N 360 may be slightly different) which should synchronize your installation with the central database.
If you don't hear back from them or see that change then contact them again since they are there 24/7
