Hi All,
We have a problem with the size of the virusDef folder - it's over 7gb.
There are multiply folders within it that are either .tmp folders (over 100!) or dated folders ie 20110513.002 (15 no).
I need to delete some of these folders to free up disk space.
We have just put "Norton 360" on the desktop hoping that this would help clear the problem but so far no change.
I've emptied the Livecache Updates but this has made little differerence.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks
It's strange!!!
I think it's better we delete the content of this folder, and then download the latest virus definition files. Here is how we can do it:
1. Start Norton 360.
2. Click Settings.
3. In the right pane, under quick links, uncheck Norton Product Tamper protection.
Select until system restart in the drop down menu.
Now go to the Virus Defs folder and delete its contents.
After you delete the content, go to the following security response page and download the definition for your operating system:
http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95
Click the file name, and then download the file, and then run it.
Then open the Norton product and then run LiveUpdate until no more updates available.

It sounds like you have been using an older version of something. What product were you using, and did you completely uninstall it prior to installing Norton 360?
Don't know what the previous Norton software was & no we didn't uninstall it first.
When we loaded up the Norton 360 it detected existing Norton software & then uninstalled it.
Older versions of Norton were not designed to manage the definitions file sizes that are necessary today. From some of the things you say, the previous Norton product was probably several years old. I would advise running the Norton Removal Tool to remove any remnants of the old program (and LiveUpdate, which used to be a separate program). Run it twice, rebooting after each pass. Then reinstall Norton 360. If you have stored information in Identity Safe, be sure to create a backup using the Identity Safe Backup option, prior to running the NRT.
I've followed the steps you laid down and it seems to have gone ok - it's free'd up 5.5 GB - fantastic.
Should there be anything in the virusDefs folder now - it's still completely empty?
Just run LiveUpdate repeatedly until it tells you that there are no available updates remaining. If your Norton program status shows as secure, you're good to go.
Great thanks for the help & advice.
