I have Norton Mobile Security 2.5 and Norton Anti-Theft 1.2 on my Android phone. Every few weeks I see a message from Symantec in my phone's notification bar telling me I need to sign in to my Norton Account.. After I sign in I see a message that I am registering my device with my Norton Account. No complaints, but why am I being asked to do this?
Hi Bulldoggy.
The short answer is - I have no idea.
Two possibilities are that:
There were problems with the "licensing" of NAT for mobiles a while ago and earlier "registering"s may have been to do with that but they should not continue to repeat now.
There were issues with NMS fully paid reverting to "Lite" some of which still seem to be ongoing. Have you had any of these problems? If so it could be related to that.
Do let us know if it happens again.
And here's wishing you a very Happy New Year. :-)
It also happened on my wife's phone, and I think I noticed a pattern: It appears that Symantec wants users to log in to their Symantec accounts from the phone, possibly to provide assurance that an update was delivered to the intended user. Once I signed in to my Symantec account from the phone, all messages vanished, and everything worked fine.
Hello again bulldoggy.
I remain puzzled. I have NMS and Norton Anti-Theft 1.2.0.112 on my phone and nothing like this has happened to me.
One further thought :-
When you installed the Norton Anti-Theft plugin on the phone did you go through to the Norton Server and register it then. If you did not I would expect it to nag you until you had. NAT is web based but the web side needs to be told what it is looking for and so that app would need assurance that a link had taken place. If this is the reason behind what you have seen then once you have registered, it should not occur again.
The Anti-Theft part of NMS is free standing and so does not need to have been linked to anything.
Does that help?
Your guess is as good as mine. I did not personally install NAT. Rather, I discovered it on my phone after I updated NMS 2.0 to 2.5. I later found out that NAT was a 'free bonus' given to users of NMS. Since that time I have been asked twice to sign in to my Symantec account. No explanation given and nothing happens after I sign in. Symantec apparently just wanted me to say hello.
Here's how it plays out: I receive two messages from Symantec on my phone. The first tells me that NAT has been disabled; the second asks me to register my device, without saying exactly how to do this. I sign in to my Symantec account and--poof--both messages are gone and everything seems to be working just fine. Oh well.
This seems to be getting odder bulldoggy.
I definitely had to separately download and install NAT to get it working as a free plugin. I assume that you had not signed up to NAT as a paid service that is available for any computers via the web.
I do not have auto update enabled for the apps on my phone, I am just wondering if you do have it enabled for NMS then it might just possibly have downloaded the addon on its own and then waited for you to activate it. Seems unlikely but could be possible.
However, I think that is enough speculation for now. My inclination is to wait and see what happens now. Norton may come back and advise that there is some special "feature" that none of us appreciated or, they may not. But the main thing seems to be, that it should not happen again. If it does then please do come back.
For now....Good Luck.
This is definitely not intended behavior. For clarity, could you provide the following for each device experiencing this:
Device Make and Model
Version of Android (from Settings > About Phone/Tablet)
Full version of NMS and NTS
Send me a private message with the Norton Account email address used (please do not put in the post).
Whether or not you have NMU or any other Task Killer installed
