After a PC failure which necessitated a full reinstallation of the OS (Windows XP) on my spare PC, I encountered a problem reinstalling Systemworks 2004 (pretty old, I know, but I need it only for Norton Utilies). It appears to install OK but does NOT ask for the CD Product Key nor give any prompts for registration. Then, when I try to run it, there is either no response or I get a message " Norton SystemWorks has encountered an internal system error, please reinstall Norton SystemWorks".
An earlier reinstallation attempt (before I updated XP from SP2 to SP3) appeared to be OK and the problem only arose after I uninstalled Norton before updating the OS to SP3. Is there any clue in the fact that there is no response to clicking on the Desktop icon or rightclicking the icon and then Open or even if I right click the icon and then Run as, selecting Administrator (me)? The error message appears only after right clicking the icon and then clicking Run as and then the default (primary) user, also me.
Has anyone any idea what is wrong or what I can do to cure the problem. Symantec can't help; Chat, E-mail and similar support is long gone for 2004.

Hi Harry
Thanks for that swift reply. Can't give a screen dump at present because SystemWorks is uninstalled - via Settings>Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs which seemed to effect a full removal - but the message is simple and unambiguous. That same message also occurred BEFORE I had my total PC failure which necessitated the reformat/reinstall OS, etc. However, I've now downloaded Norton Removal Tool for future use - but presume it will work only if I reinstall SystemWorks so I'll do that and try uninstall again with NRT.
I don't have any other Norton products installed - or any other applicattions. I was just in the process of rebuilding everything from scratch and thought that updating the OS to SP3 (my OS CD is SP2) might be advantageous before installing Norton. Perhaps I'd have been better to update XP to SP3 AFTER Norton; what do you think?
Whatever, I'll proceed as indicated above and try using NRT, then let you know what transpires.

Further to my earlier reply (01-24-2012 10:01 AM) I've used NRT and it certainly uninstalls everything related to Norton. Both the Norton SystemWorks folder and the Symantec folder under Programs were removed in their entirety. However, the problem on attempting a further re-install remains - with results after installation completed as before, except that there was no error message - simply that SystemWorks did not run. Once again, I noted that there was no call for the insertion of the Product Code during the installation procedure. Surely this must be part of the problem? But why is there no such request for the Product Code?
Any advice will be welcomed.
