Hi - First post on the main NIS boards but been VERY active on Norton Family.
To try and give Norton one final try at not being the cause of me lossing three evenings a week trying to address why NF is not working I though I would go for a clean install of all Norton Products.
During this process I have had some really strange experiences that I would like to share with the forum in case anyone has had similar issues. Alongside all this I am slightly worried that my PC may have a MTIB or DNS poisoning malware running on it...
So I removed NF, then ran the Norton Cleanup Tool to remove NIS. After this I rebooted and received instructions in Internet Explorer (interestingly not my default browser) and went as instructed to do the reinstall from Manage.Norton.com. However, I was not "allowed" to download a new copy of the software because I already had 3 installs!. Not phased by this I went to remove the two licenses for the PCs that I wanted to get clean installs on - but a nice little box came up saying "You have chosen to remove Norton Internet Security from this device. Are you sure? Note: This is recommended only if you the device is lost or no longer being used".
Slightly confused - I searches the norton manage web site for help on re-installing Norton - nothing, then I found a way (after about five minutes of pointless clicking) to get to the main Norton support site, and again no help on this issue. So I then contacted Norton chat support. Who after trying to walk me though what I asked in my first question told me to just remove the licenses. Re-installs went well. BUT
On both systems the re-install left me with Norton showing "Green" status but my definitions between 46 & 55 days out of date. To fix them I needed to download nearly 200MB of updates, and also execute a patch which stopped and started Norton. How can it be right that a new install would
a) Show green when it is so far out of date
b) Be so far our of date - and be out of date by different amounts on different machines
How hard would it be for Norton to ship it up to date? Whatever they should not show a green status in this case.
Alongside this I had a really weird issue on first PC - that once NIS has installed I lost all abilty to resolve DNS until I rebooted, and even then DNS resolution took about 4 mins to start working. Added to that not long after my last chat with Symantec (over an issue where the cheap ecrater version of NIS I purchased had been registered by the seller to a different email address) during which I had to enter my credit card details - my card details were in fact stolen and used to try and set up a fake paypal account. Then this week they were used to try and buy some expensive Audio Equipment...
It's possible that all these things are unrelated but that's my story - any thoughts gratefully received.
Full scan in progress on both machines...
