I do hope Symantec do fix it by themselves with the next patch/hotfix/upgrade.
Hi Tywin7,
Norton Ideas forum is for product enhancements. I think this is a defect (should I say bug?) but I will know more once I hear back from Symantec.
Edit: Just saw your last post. Obviously I cannot speak to timeframes of a potential fix but the first step is for Symantec to check into it a bit and determine if it is a bug or something else. Even if it is a bug no one can give you a timeframe for a fix.
In the meantime the firewall rule should be a workaround. Have you tried this firewall rule yet and if so does it work for you?
Best wishes.

Tywin7 wrote:Ah OK. I thought if I used port 80, which is by default, already open, it might work. I highly urge Norton to make their default component work!!! Strange thing is that the WIn7 can see the XP remote monitoring but not vice versa.
I'm wondering if this might have something to do with the new homegroup concept Windows 7 has now which of course XP does not have. Do you see the problem in both directions if you connect one of the computers as a wired connection? I would try both in turn.
More importantly if you add the firewall rule on both computers does it solve your problem completely?
Best wishes.
Allen
Nah. ITs not a big deal to me (I can monitor my dad's computer but he rarely needs to monitor mine) so I would probably just wait for the patch.
Allen,
Did you hear anything back from Norton?

Hi atomicbubba,
All I have received back thus far is that they are checking on it. I'll give it a while longer before pinging them again.
Best wishes.

Hi Allen.
I can confirm it is a bug now.
Everything was working fine before at home with a XP pro SP3 desktop and a XP laptop connected wireless. Both systems running NIS 2011.
I just replaced the laptop with a new one running windows 7 32bit and encountered the same problem.
The laptop could monitor the XP desktop but the desktop could not monitor the windows 7 laptop.
I took the steps you posted and got it to work, thank you very much.
I also noticed that I didn't have to move the new firewall rule to the top of the list, I only had to move it above the existing rule "Default block windows file sharing".
So it worked fine both ways with an XP desktop and XP laptop
With XP desktop and Windows 7 laptop the laptop could monitor the desktop, but the desktop could not monitor the latop without your rule added to the laptop.
Thank you very much Allen.
Dave
Hi Dave,
It is a bug alright and I have reported it to Symantec quite a while back.
Yes in this case it does not have to be moved to the top of the list, it just needs to be above the entry which is causing the block. For simplicity in cases like this we advise people to move it to the top of the list so that it ensures that rule will take precedence over any other conflicting rules.
Best wishes.

Moved to the thread of its own for better exposure
What version of Windows are you using and is it 32 bit or 64 bit?
SystemWOrks has been discontinued by Norton so that might account for any incompatibility -- it won't work with Windows 7 I understand.
There is a specific Forum for SystemWorks -- Other Norton Products -- so I'll ask for your message to be moved over there or better exposure. You won't lose sight of it because a link will be left here.
Hi Hugh.
Windows XP 32 bit
Both computers are the same.
The network map icons show my computer, my wife's computer, and a "generic device". The generic device is an audio receiver for my home theater system.
The icon for my PC has the green check mark showing secure.
The icons for my wife's computer and the AV receiver don't show anything other than that they're there, and on-line.
Have Norton open on both computers, setting up remote monitoring, same passkey. When I get to discovery, the progress bar just keeps going, and that's it.
I'm stumped as the network map icons show my wife's computer and the receiver, so Norton "knows" they're there.
What got me started on this was setting up the A/V receiver to play music files on my computer. It's connected to my router, and receives and plays internet radio fine, but I can't get it to play the files on the computer (the files should show on the receiver but don't). I thought it might have something to do with Norton trusting the receiver. I can't seem to figure out how to get Norton to trust my wife's computer and the A/V receiver.
Thanks very much for the reply.

Have you tried clicking on each item in the network map and click edit under trust. Set to full trust for each item on each machine.

When I click on the icon, the window shows device name, category, remote monitoring status, etc. but there's nothing that allows me to edit the trust level.
That seems to be my problem, how do I set trust for the other computer and the A/V reciever.
Thanks for the reply.
Thanks for all the background -- I'll happily leave you with Delphinium for the actual troubleshooting.
Thanks Hugh.
Still need help here with remote monitoring.
Thanks.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but have you checked your firewall settings?
If your really talking about SystemWorks, as far as I know it didn't come with a firewall.
It has norton antivirus but no firewall that I know of. It may have "worm guard" or "intrusion prevention" that you can try disabling temorarily as a test but it does not as far as I know have a firewall.
I have norton antivirus 2011 installed on this system and although it has a "Network Security Map" I really don't think it does much besides look very pretty.
Like you, I can see my other devices but there are no trust settings like with NIS because it's not my firewall.
The remote monitoring feature should work though something must be blocking it.
Dave
Hi Dave.
SystemWorks 2008 has what they call internet worm protection. It's their version of a firewall.
I've tried everything by following the help files.
Have the same version of SystemWorks on both computers.
Have them both open, same passkey, etc. But the progress bar just keeps going and going and going (on both PC's), and that's it.
My PC never shows up on my wife's, and her's never shows up on mine.
Thanks very much for the reply.

Hi manuman59,
I do believe you misunderstood what it is used for.
There is a lot of info on Remote Management in the Hep file (and the lnks at the end of it) located here:
Hopefully that will help.
