The norton toolbar is not compatible with Sharepoints datasheet view. It causes errors when editing a rich text box and inserts black highlighting. We need to completely remove the toolbar from IE. Merely disabling the toolbar from the add-ons menu does not work. Please let us know how we can do this, otherwise, our entire organization will have to move off of Norton.
It's Norton Security 2010. The version of IE is 8.0 running on Windows 7. I don't need to just disable it, I need to remove the toolbar entirely. Thanks!
So, my version is 17.0.0.136. Here is a shot of the error. The norton toolbar causes a conflict with the sharepoint/office dll that controls the datasheet. After typing text in a rich text box, it highlights the text in black.I had to manually change the ones that are not highlighted in black.
Going in and just disabling the add-in from the IE menu does not work. I am posting this because I want to know how to remove the dll or remove the reference to the toolbar dll once and for all without having to remove Norton all together.

Hi epsilon212
Here is what I find works to get rid of the toolbar from IE (I am assuming you are using NIS2010)
Boot your PC to safe mode
Open windows Explorer and browse to
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\17.0.0.136
Rename to CoIEPlg.dll file to smething else (I added .old to the file name)
The Firefox equivalent is CoFFPgn.dll
Reboot your PC in normal mode and the Norton Toolbar should no longer load. Please then check to see if your issue is resolved and let us know the result.
Apologies there was a misunderstanding. When you said you need to remove not just the toolbar but "completely remove the toolbar ", I assumed that this is what you had done. I believe what you are now indicating is your desire to do so because you feel that disabling the toolbar is insufficient.
However, with respect, may I suggest that you are making a presumption in that you are presuming that the problem you are experiencing is because of the "toolbar" whereas it could quite easily be a consequence of another function within Norton, which is why yogesh_mohan proposals are entirely appropriate and should be tried.
As I write this I see on my 2nd screen that mdturner has just responded with another proposal to rename a file that might be "confidential IE plugin" (a guess) anyway, I hope that that works for you. Sorry for my misunderstanding.
This solution actually works and takes care of the problem, but you should actually keep the old name of the file and blank the contents else Norton replaces the file on reboot.
This is a big issue that Norton needs to address for the large group of people that are using Sharepoint and have Norton installed on their computers. Our entire organization has this issue, and it might be easier to remove Norton rather than trying to implement this work around. At the very least, Norton needs to make available the option of completely removing the toolbar.

HI epsilon212
I'm glad that there is, at least, a temporary solution to the iisue and am sure that Symantec have noted the content of this thread and will have it on their "to do " list tp orovide a way of running without the Norton toolbar if that is what the user wishes.
If your question has been answered to your satisfaction (temporarily at least) then please mark the message that you believe contained the solution to your issue by using the green button beside it. This will mark the thread as Solved and others will know that it has been answered and can see the solution.
We’re looking in to this issue to see if we’re the culprit in this conflict.
I would strongly recommend that you DO NOT rename any of the files to work around this issue, as this could cause errors in other dependencies, as well as affect any future patches we may make to the product.
If you need to disable with IE8, you should be able to remove the Toolbar from the menu by right clicking on the toolbar area, uncheckingNorton Toolbar, make sure both Symantec NCO BHO and Symantec Intrusion Prevention are disabled. That will disable all plugins that we have with IE. You could also try just disabling the NCO BHO, as that would more than likely be the cause if it was us causing this issue.
I’ll respond if we need more information, or if we are unable to reproduce this issue in-house.
My understanding was that the poster had already disabled the toolbar in the normal way and it was not enough. I suppose it is possible that he did not disable all three elements in the manage add-ons.
We did try disabling all three components from IE, but that does not work. The conflict still occurrs. The CoIEPlg.dll is still getting loaded even though it has been disabled through IE. Having the toolbar disabled (but still installed) does NOT do the trick.
The CoIEPlg.dll occurs on both Vista and Windows 7 and with Norton Internet Security Version 9 and 10 (all running IE 8). We have not tested XP.
Thanks!
