Renewal Costs Too High

I am not sure this is the right forum but did a scan and saw Rowan Trollope's name. I read a very interesting article in the July '08 Businessweek magazine about NIS 2009. Now I, like many others, had turned away from Symantec years ago when the products begame bloated pigs and resource hogs. So when NIS 2009 came out in Sept. '08 I bought it. I like it a lot and protect 3 PC's with it. I decided to renew early and found that the renewal is $55! I can buy a new copy form Symantec for $60, or order it from costco.com for $40 and free shipping.

Now, before anyone gets down on me about support, online updates, etc., I do fully realize the implications of all this. Maybe I am just getting too old for this game, but I bought the product in '08. I would want, and expect, the renewal to be less than buying a new product, ANYWHERE, period. Why should I have to basically repurchase a new software package each year?

I just had this discussion on the CHAT line with support, so will repeat what I said there. Trend Micro has taken a page out of Norton's book (I wonder what ever happened to Peter?) and now has a product much less resource intensive. Please do not make me go to the competition over a principal.

Hi, BSDunnJr. I too have noticed the online renewal price versus the price of a new box version from various vendors. I’m really pleased with NIS 2009 on my system and intend to stay with this product as long as it continues to remain robust and system resources friendly. I’m just not sure exactly which way I will go as far as extending my current subscription or buying NIS 2009 new in the box. If online renewal was the same or lower cost than NIS 2009 purchased from third-party vendors, I would renew for an additional year or two right now.

Symantec does actually provide a discount for prior users of their product.  If there are better deals than that around, the best thing to do is buy the new disc at the sale price and simply insert the key from the package.  It is the best of both worlds, really. It isn’t necessary to buy online.  You are not buying new software each year, but a subscription to use the software, and you have the ability to upgrade to each new version as it becomes available for free.

Thanks, delphinium. That sounds reasonable and simple to implement.
