Renewal time questions

Hi, all you wonderful helpers!

I am running W7 64 bit.  I am running NIS Version 20.4.0.40,  My subscription is about to expire.

I have read the many threads on the high cost of renewal versus purchasing a new product.  However,

I am 60 years old, with some cognitive issues.  So, I wanted to check with you guys  to make sure I understand the process.

Let's say I choose to purchase a new product from this link:

http://us.norton.com/upgrade-center/promo&trf_id=symcom&inid=us_NIS_2013_upgrade_renew_to_store

Tell me if I have this correct:

I would make that purchase, but NOT download any product, and I would just save my email with the new product key.

Then, on the last day (or second to last?) of my current subscription, I should open my current product, click on the "renew" button, then click on the link for "I have a new product key", and enter the NEW product key in the spaces provided, then click "next".

If those steps are correct, what happens when I click "next"?

Please advise!

And thank you in advance!

Angie

Hi!  Thanks for replying so quickly!

I should have made it clear that I knew the renew option through my current product was always an option.

I should have made it clear that the price difference is why I was considering the option of purchasing the product from the link I gave.

So, having cleared that up, can you verify for me that the steps I outlined in my first post above, are correct, since I choose to purchase the product from that Symantec link?

(I am really hesitant to trust Amazon, after reading mixed reviews of that route)

And yes, once I have renewed, I will update to the new version.

Thanks again!

Angie

Yes you are correct in the process you noted.

This same process is valid regardless of where you purchase the product. Many here have searched for deals from reputable retailers, online and in store, to get the best price. The key is finding a reputable retailer.

If you feel more comfortable dealing directly with Symantec, that is worth the price for piece of mind for you.

Thank you, both of you groovy gurus!:catwink:

I've been using Norton sice 2001.  For the last several years, I was able to renew through Norton chat, and get a discounted price over renewal through my UI.  This year, they told me they could no longer renew through chat, and that it had to be done by phone.  They wanted to have a "Level 2" rep call me to handle it.  For some reason, I was leery.

Anyway, thank you guys again.  I was pretty sure I had done my homework here on the forum, for the correct procedure to use a new product key for renewal.

I appreciate this forum!  I have learned so much over the years, and found the answers to so many questions, even without having to post.

Blessings!:smileyhappy:

Guys, are the links below legitimate Norton/Symantec links?

Here is the link to the initial page:

http://buy-static.norton.com/norton/ps/2up_us_en_nis360.html?om_sem_cid=hho_sem_sy:us:ggl:en:e|kw0000002402|18767493076|c&country=US

and here is the link to the "1-year Download":

http://buy.norton.com/ps?ctry=US&lang=EN&selSKU=21234720&tppc=B1EB0E56-40D1-BE4F-ED14-33EE8F3C83F2&ptype=cart&om_sem_cid=hho_sem_sy:us:ggl:en:e|kw0000002402|18767493076|c&country=US

which leads to this url:

http://buy.norton.com/estore/mf/cart

On that last page, you have to change the "quantity" from "2" to "1".

:catfrustrated:

Too bad things can't be simple and straigthforward.

But anyway, I felt unsure about the URLs......

Is that a legit symantec/norton purchase?

****sigh****

Those sites look good.

As long as you got there after manually typing in Norton .com into your browser, you are good to go.

No, I got there from a Google Search for "Norton Internet Security".

It was the first ad link on the results page, on the left,

There was a similar ad link on the right side of the results page, with the same price offer, but a slightly different url.  But both "buy" or "download links led to the same page/url, which is the third url I posted above, which is:

http://buy.norton.com/estore/mf/cart

I was unable to find that specific $39.99 offer anywhere by going to either Norton.com or symantec-norton.com, or any of the other obvious "offical" norton or symantec urls.

Like I said, why can't this just be straighforward?

Yet another example of our culture's failing ability to communicate directly and honestly, without subterfuge or contradicting messages.:smileymad:

I'm tempted to search for a couple of other "brand name" products, and see if the same tactics are used.

grrrrr.

" 'scuse me while I tend to how I feel....."

I don't want to change to another product.  In all these years, I have only gotten two infections, which Norton missed,.  That's a pretty good track record.

I'm just frustrated both at my NEED to be so "frugal", and at the difficulty involved.

I think that Norton thinks that most people will get so worn out and frustrated trying to find a reasonable alternative the their ridiculously inflated renewal price, that we/they will just give up and bite the bullet and PAY that inflated renewal price, just to get it over with.

Sorry.  Rant over.

It would still be nice to know if the $39.99 deal is a legit Norton offer, FROM Norton's websiite.

Hi AngelaBeth here is a link to Newegg that I use to buy my NIS2013 3pc newegg has at various times of the year offered free shipping and a rebate  the final price is usually $0.00 after rebate . Right now Norton 360 premier 3pc is on sale with a $55.00 rebate and free shipping $7.99 after the rebate    http://www.newegg.com/Symantec-Software-Security/BrandSubCat/ID-1330-377     NOTE the new Norton version 21.0.0xx is out but you may want to hold off using them as there are a lot of changes in the software mainly in the id vault  Here is the link for the NIS 2013 3pc right now it is not on sale  if you can wait for a few weeks it usually will be on sale  with free shipping and a rebate      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832408396     ALF60

If you want cheap for NIS 2013 how about $14.95? Of course you'll have to add shipping!

Or, you can select "PC Download" and get a copy - more or less - immediately, for the same price.

My sub is up in 13 days, that's what I'm going to be doing. All I need is the KEY anyway.:smileywink:

Thanks for the additional suggestions, guys.

As I mentioned, I did look into buying the download version from Amazon, but after reading the negative reviews, I got scared to try that.

I know there are more positive than negative reviews on the product on Amazon, but still....it worried me.

There is absolutely no difference with the Amazon version compared to the one you buy from Symantec or from a store. They are the same.

Bombastus, Is that true regardless of where one purchases Norton software?

If so, then why do so many talk about "purchasing from a reputable dealer"?

What would a "disreputable" dealer be selling as a Norton product?

As a side note, I did already mention that I would not be installing new software, but would only be using the new key to renew my existing product.

Hi, AngelaBeth. I do not want to influence you to do something that you feel uncomfortable with, but if you're just looking to renew your subscription, then all you need is the Product Key, and if you were to purchase from Amazon it should be included in your confirmation email as well as being available at Amazon, in the "Your Games and Software Library" area under your Account. I really can't imagine that anything could go wrong with that process.

But, of course, it's your call. You do what you feel is best for you. Any way you go, entering the new Key into your current product should be a painless process. Just make sure you wait until your current sub is about to expire, so that you don't lose a bunch of days.

Yes, it is true regardless of where you buy the software. The program is always the same. The reason you should only buy from reputable sellers is the product key. Bogus sellers might sell you a fake or old key that won’t work to activate the program. But if you have a legit key, you can activate a NIS bought anywhere with it. You can always download the latest version directly from Symantec and use your key to activate it - you don’t have to install from a bought cd for example. You really pay for the key, not that one particular copy of the progrsm.

Not if you click on the Download button ...

And I don't know if you have to download or get the KEY when you actually buy .....

AngelaBeth,

You are right to be cautious

<< Bombastus, Is that true regardless of where one purchases Norton software?  Bombastus, Is that true regardless of where one purchases Norton software?   >>

His next reply is potentially dangerous because there are scams out there and so I think it goes a bit too far to say:

<< Yes, it is true regardless of where you buy the software. The program is always the same.  >>

since there have been reports of infected software being received.

But if you buy from Amazon and use the Download button the download does, I understand, literally come from the Norton Servers and not from some third party.

I suspect any adverse reports you may have seen on Amazon have more to do with whether the purchaser likes the product or not or occasionally on products where Amazon accepts the order on behalf of a third party that ships the product -- what they call Marketplace I believe.

But that $15 offer is one you should grab if it is still available!  Make sure you click on the DOWNLOAD button if the other button is the active one.

How can I say this diplomatically.

It would be so helpful if each person who responds actually reads all my posts.

So, for clarity's sake, and for at least the third time:

I do not plan to download any software.  I plan to only use the new product key to renew my existing product.  This is regardless of where I purchase.

Even if I did buy from Amazon, I would not even want to download the software, unless I had no choice (as you mentioned might be a possibility).

I did read bad reviews from Amazon about things like product keys not being sent in confirmation emails, troubles with correct number of days not showing up, only getting coverage for 2 PCs instead of 3, and reports of dismal service from Norton for "bargain products", even reports of having to pay more money for subscription activation over and above Amazon's charges.

Plus the fact, that with the download version, I cannot add it to my "cart"; it asks me to enter my credit card info all over again, even though I have that info saved in my Amazon account.

Finally, Amazon says there are NO REFUNDS on software downloads.

Those are just a few of the things that scared me about buying the download from Amazon.

FINALLY, I have asked twice for someone to try to verify for me if the links in my post #44 above, are legitimate Norton links, and I still don't have a DEFINITIVE answer.

I wish a Symantec employee would weigh in on all these issues, but especially about my question in post #44.
