Renewing versus buying new product

Not sure if I should be starting a new thread, but the cost of renewing a N360 3.0 subscription from Symantec Store is much higher than the cost of buying a new version of N360 3.0 from Amazon.  £55 against £45 the last time I looked.

So, on the surface, it makes more sense to buy new product rather than renew the existing subscription.  If I take this route, do I have to install the new version over the old one before activating it, or can I just re-activate the old version using the new product key.

I see you are UK based so for costs you need to check the UK/Eire website. You can set that up at the top of the screen where it says what country or area you are logged into. I mention this because much of the information here is USA/CAN based unless otherwise specified.

In principle the difference you will see if you have remaining time on your existing subscription is that when you renew the new period is added to any remaining while if you buy a new version it will replace it and you will lose your unexpired time. This applies, I beleive, even if you use the new KEY instead of renewing since the terms attach to the KEY and not the software.

If you wait to the last minute to install then it does not make any difference.

<< If you already have N360 V3 installed, you can re-activate the old version using the new product key from the Amazon.com purchase to "renew".  >>

Could you check what I say about the loss of unexpired time on the old KEY please.

This whole busines is such a mess and the sticky message I thought Tony Weiss had posted seems to have disappeared ....

This message? Subscription Clarification

(It’s hidden in the “Announcements” area.)

Thanks for the link -- hidden is right since I looked in them but didn't find it ...

He doesn't mention the point I raised but I'm confident it has come up in the Forums and was answered as indicated -- that using a purchased product whether by installation or using the KEY alone deletes any remaining time and does not add to it as Renewal does.

Could you confirm this one way or the other since it relates to the OP's situation.

Ah, perhaps you meant this post from Tony: "Subscriptions and Upgrades Clarified"? There's been so many on that topic; I asked Tony to consolidate them all into one area. I'll ask him again when he comes back from his vacation.

But about losing remaining time -- I have never lost any time when I enter a new Activation Key. My experience is that it adds to my existing time. But I'll ask around here and see if anyone else here has experienced it differently.

Yes I must have been thinking of that thread because in it Tony Weiss says:

Re: Subscriptions and Upgrades Clarified

I believe a retail purchase will start your subscription time over, while a renewal will append the subscription time to your current subscription.

and

Re: Subscriptions and Upgrades Clarified

I'll get some clarification on this point, but I believe renewing always adds the time to your current subscription, while activating a purchased key (from a bought product or the "Buy a key" option) gives you the subscription time starting from the time of installation or activation.

which is not touched upon in:

 Subscription Clarification

and yet is a frequent question because of the price differential which one cannot blame the user for wanting to take advantage of.

I hope Tony can combine the two into one and keep it sticky and easily found.

Tim_Lopez just explained to me how activation is tied to the key. So if you had 200 days remaining and then you activate using a different key, you will then only have 365 days remaining (Unless if you are renewing) and how you can contact customer support to get the two keys (200 + 365) joined to give you the full 565 days. So it sounds like your understanding is correct.

Thanks for cofirming that -- it has come up about 3 times today already.

The workaround is to not install until near the end of the existing subscription and to get the latest version if necessary by downloading and installing using the old KEY.
