Restore Online Backup

Norton 360, Version 5.1.0.29.  Purchased from Amazon.  Full backup done on 7/10/11.  Computer crashed after new modem from Comcast was installed (bundle package to include telephone  - have always used Comcast for internet).  Computer kept shutting off and only operated under Safe Mode.  Forced to do restore of my full computer (through Windows 7), which worked fine, except all data is from January 2011.  Went to Norton 360 to restore backup and replace existing data.  It took well over 24 hours.  Last viewed is was at 40.8% complete when I left computer.  Got home from work and Norton was closed.  No replaced data.  Cannot find backed up files.  Very frustrated.

After a restore of data is complete, where do I find those files to restore my computer?  Do I need to this again?

Help!

Hello Sam48

Thanks

Kavitha

I followed these directions and discovered that my restore was canceled.  Timed out?  I had turned off all of my power settings so that wouldn't happen. If I start again, I'm looking at another 48 hours of restore time, but it will probably cancel again.  Any advise?

Response to Dick - my full backup was to Norton online storage.  It's 8.8 GB of data.

When my computer crashed and did a full recovery, it went back to January 2011 when MacAfee was security system.  I purchased this Dell computer in October 2010 and it came with MacAfee.  Every time I tried to uninstall to put my Norton account back on, it crashed.  I gave up.  In May 2011 we bought a new HP computer for my husband.  The manager at Staples gave me the link to uninstall MacAfee on my Dell computer.  Staples gave us new Norton 360 disks to get a new start.  So I now have two Norton 360 accounts running.  That's a whole other issue.

Anyway... so after this recent crash and recovery, I uninstalled MacAfee and reinstalled Norton 360 from the disks.

As my last post updated, I've discovered from another post's instructions that the restore of my online backup was canceled during the restore.  I'm not sure what steps to take next.  Try again to restore?

Sam48,

Just to confirm. When you uninstalled the other security program you did use their removal tools to do it after uninstalling from the control panel? Security programs do not play well together.

Background:

The backup is encrypted on your machine then transmitted to the Norton server. This takes time. It also ensures the security of your data. Since we are dealing with the Internet and its traffic jams I'd suggest that you break your backup set into four or maybe five parts. This will make each one about 2GB and reduce the time it should take to complete. It will also give you a chance to confirm that everything is working correctly much sooner :smileywink:

I use an external hard drive for my backups so it runs a bit faster.

Hope this helps. Let us know. We'll leave a light on.

Dick,

I used MacAfee's removal tool to uninstall their software.  When I went to the control panel it was no longer listed as a software (to remove).  After that was done, I installed Norton 360 from the disk.

I will try to restore with about 1GB at a time to make it manageable.  I won't have a chance until I'm home this weekend.

I've purchased an external hard drive for all future backups.  I've learned the hard way that online storage is not a good way to go.  Made me feel good, but this has been a disaster to try and recover.

Thanks for your help!

Sam48,

Online backup isn't the total answer to all backup situations. If it works for you great. If not, then there are other ways to go. The external drive solution has proven very useful to me. I'm using Ghost and do a full backup each month and incremental backups twice a week. Ghost is bigger, badder and more expensive than 360 so if you don't need all of its features, save your dollars.

keep in touch. We'll keep a light on.

One file and folder at a time and I've restored what I needed the most.  At the end of restore, a pop-up appears to confirm that I want to overwrite existing data.  I assume that when I did a full restore that took 48 hours... that I was not at my computer when that pop-up appeared and timed out before I could respond.  I checked the box to not ask again, but the next file asked for the same confirmation.

I figure solution solved and will no longer use online storage.  My WD external drives  (a 1T and 320 GB) will be my backup plan for future (one for one-site and the other for off-site).

Thanks again for your help!
