Restore with Norton Ghost Solution Suite 2.5

I have installed Norton Ghost Solution Suite on my server (Windows Server 2003 Standard).  I was able to create a .gho file, but can not restore from this file.

A little background might help.  I have just become a Server Administrator to a server that has no backup, no sandbox, no nothing.  I went out and created a virtual server (on a separate) box and installed Server 2003.  I then created the image of the production server and have not been able to restore from the .gho image.  It wants an iso.  Looked on the forums found 2 post that supposedly converted the gho to iso with a Symantec tool.  Some tool is not working right (me or Symantec) but I can not for the life of me restore the gho image of production to my test virtual server.  I got a feeling when I do figure this out I'm going to say "Well, DUH!"  Please help me get to this moment.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi,

unfortunately we can help you here only with the Consumer Norton products. To get a better help for Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 please go to these sites:

- Business Forum: http://www.symantec.com/connect/backup-and-archiving

- SGSS support page: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=landing&key=52023

Thanks

You still there Ed?

Although this isn't the corporate forum, If it's any help I'll tell you want I do restoring images  into Virtual PC.

I assume your wanting a ISO to mount the image so you can restore it into the VM.

I'm not sure about server 2003 (the physical system) but Windows 7 has native support for VHD's.  You can make a virtual hard drive, copy the .gho files into it and then mount that VHD as the second hard drive.

Boot the virtual machine with a ghost floppy image, real floppy or CD, ISO, and use Ghost to restore the image from the second virtual drive to the first.

In a pinch, you can create a XP virtual machine, add a second virtual drive and once you install the VM additions you can drag and drop the image files onto the second drive.  Then you can dismount the second drive and set up a new VM with it as the second drive and use the steps above to restore the image.

Thanks, I was about to give up and was looking around for a free trial of something else.

2003 doesn't make or mount VHD's nativly. :(

It wasn't added till 2008R2

Here is how you do it in windows 7 if it's any help

http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2009/05/14/native-vhd-support-in-windows-7.aspx

Just look at how to create one and access it through explorer, it may go on to tell you how to boot to it but thats something else.

Edit- All you need to do is make a VHD in disk managment, assign it a letter and copy the gho files to it.  Then copy the vhd to the server and use it as the second virtual drive.

I also found this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708295(WS.10).aspx

A command line tool to access a VHD through virtual server.

Although using a windows 7 system or even temporarily installing XP may be easier.

LOL, I don't drink but you can by me a nice cup of coffee. Likewise if your in So Cal.

Hope it works for you Ed, I never used deploy anywhere with GSS.  But at least you'll be able to get the image on the VHD

Let me know if it works out
