Restoring another computers back up from an external network hard drive

Hi, My sons laptop recently crashed and have purchased a new one safe in the knowledge that I religiously backed up the laptop with Norton 360 to a network back up drive. However, I have now gone round in circles trying to find a way of restoring these files to the new laptop. Can anyone please help because as of this moment the backup utility on 360 is useless if you cannot restore files from a crashed PC.

Regards

Andy

Hi

Tried this, all that happened was that a new structure was created within the existing folder. When I went to restore it would only show files from this new structure. There does not appear to be a way of telling it to look at any existing strutures.

Then please try to open the ARestore.exe file from C:\Program Files\Norton 360\Engine\5.0.0.125

Let me know if this can open it.

Hi,

I have the same kind of problem.  I had (and still have) automatic back up activated in Norton.  Back up happens on a RAID1 network drive.

The laptop was running on WinXP.   It crashed.  I decided it was time to move to Win7 (Ultimate).

Once everything was installed again I checked if I could retrieve my back up data.  However Norton does not allow me to access the data.  Instead it makes a whole new set.  Now luckily I had my HDD removed and used a whole new HDD to install Win7 so I was able to recover my data.  But NOT with the help of Norton.

What should I have done (or what did I do wrong)?

Thanks

Can both of you please tell me which version do you have on the machine?

1. Open the main window
2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu
3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 5.0.0.125)

Thanks!

Hi

Opened ARestore but got - no backup sets found

I am now using version  5.0.0.125

backup was made on version 4 but had same problem with this

Is your new backup set identical to the one you had created before? Sometimes it only works, if it is the same.

No it is much smaller as I only wanted to create a set to see if that helped it to see the old one.

It shouldn't be this difficult I will not be using Norton backup in the future until it resolves this issue. It would also help if you could actually see the file names when you explore through the bacup set as this would help make retrieval much easier.

I notified the concerned Symantec team to check into this error.

Hi peps,

Please follow the steps in the Knowledge Base article:

Cannot find backup sets when I try to restore files in Norton 360

PapauZ has already suggested this step. I am just posting the detailed steps. These steps are for Version 4.0. So wherever you find 4.x in the document, change it to 5.x

Hi

I have followed these instructions to the letter and I can now see the files.

Many thanks

Hi,

Did anyone find a solution for this? I can't restore my online files after replacing my hard drive that crashed. I have 360 version 5 and I even tried to restore to a different folder and still won't work. The Tech's in India can't help either.
