Restoring Norton Toolbar

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox on my secondary computer because it had somehow become corrupted. How do I get the two Norton toolbars to show up again on the fresh copy of Firefox? (I’m running NIS 2010 and XP.) Thanks.

I retained the settings. But the toolbars were missing from the list of extensions when FF was reinstalled.

Okay; please try removing Firefox completely. You can look at this post for more instructions:

Appreciate the prompt responses. I’d rather avoid reinstalling FF again (particularly since I’ve now also reinstalled several add-ons), and I’d especially like to avoid deleting all my settings, which means I’d have to start again with bookmarks, cookies, etc. Is there any other way to bring back Norton toolbars?

Okay, try deleting only your Firefox extensions folder - you will find a link to the instructions in umaiselvi's post over here:

I’m afraid I don’t see the three generic extensions files in the place where they’re supposed to be; all I see there are files related to my add-ons, which I don’t want to erase. If there’s no other way to do this, perhaps I’ll just wait for an update of either FF or Norton and hope that the toolbars are resupplied.

Hi BlebNevus,

It sounds like you may be looking in the wrong place.  Follow the instructions in this post to access your profile from the Firefox Help Menu - be sure to follow the instruction to select File > Exit in your browser before deleting or renaming the extension files, as Firefox must be completely closed before modifying the files in your profile.

With MozBackup you don't need to reinstall all your add ons. It does it for you. That's what its for. I do it all the time and it works awesome.

Just to clarify, deleting the extensions.ini, extensions.cache and extensions.rdf files does not remove any installed add-ons and the three files are recreated when Firefox restarts.

Thanks. Followed the directions and deleted the extension files. Still no sign of the Norton toolbar, however, even after restarting.

Did you do a COMPLETE uninstall of Firefox? Do you have the following under your Firefox add ons: Norton IPS 2.0 and Norton toolbar? Are you using Firefox 3.6.3? The other option is to do a complete uninstall of Firefox and Norton. Then install Firefox first and install Norton second.

>> Do you have the following under your Firefox add ons: Norton IPS 2.0 and Norton toolbar?

No. That's the whole reason I'm asking for help.

>>Did you do a COMPLETE uninstall of Firefox?

No. As I mentioned, it's not worth it to me to lose my bookmarks and cookies. I was hoping to find a way short of that to bring back the toolbars.

>>Are you using Firefox 3.6.3?

Yes.

After the initial problems with the Norton FF extensions, sometimes FF is a bit mixed up and cannot install the right extensions.

You now have two more possibilities, which you can try after eachother :

I.

- Close Firefox

- Go to the Profiles folder of Firefox

- Open with Notepad the  ´extensions.ini´  file in there and carefully remove the lines which have

  ´C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\..................´ in it´.

- Save the extensions.ini file.

- Then open with Notepad the  ´extensions.cache´  file in there and carefully remove the lines which have either

   ´winreg-app-global .......  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\..................´   in it´.

    or

   ´app-global .......  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\..................´    in it´.

These are long lines ending with a number.

- Save the  extensions.cache  file.

- Start Firefox again and see if the extensions come up now.

II.

(probably the quickest and most effective, it takes 5-10 minutes only)

1. Uninstall NIS, but reply to save your settings etc.

2. Delete the Norton directory in the Program Data (Application Data on WINXP). (important!!!)

3. Download and run (from the link below) NIS; this is the latest version 17.6.0.32  :

http://www.symantec.com/nl/nl/norton/support/kb/we b_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=2009030303503 ...

Remark  : If you need another language of the link above, simply select your language in the right hand upper corner of the page at the field 'Beschikbare vertalingen' or 'Available translations'

This installation file now creates another directory in Program Data containing the right install.rdf. The directory name now is :

file:///C:/ProgramData/Norton/{C55C096-0F1D-4F28-A AA2-85EF591126E7}/NIS_17.6.032/coFFPIgn

Afterwards the Norton Toolbar should show up in FF..

If you then have some other extensions (non Norton) disabled, just reinstall them from the FF extensions site. Your settings are not gone and will be the same afterwards.

Plse report back if it is solves now.

YOU WILL NOT LOOSE ANYTHING. Thats why somebody already pointed you in the direction of the other person I helped. If you use MozBackup you WILL NOT LOOSE anything. Trust me. Firefox has its own bookmark backup feature also. Its under bookmarks/organize bookmarks.

“hvgsel”: Many thanks for your time. I prefer to try your first solution, which doesn’t require reinstalling NIS. Unfortunately, neither the main “extensions” file (I assume that’s the same as “extensions.ini,” which I don’t see) nor the “extensions.cache” file contains anything Norton related or “app-global.” At this point, I think I’m just going to live without the toolbars and hope they’ll appear with the next upgrade of either NIS or Firefox.

Dear blebnevus........................I can guarantee you that if you do what I say it will work. Look at the other thread. I repair pc's for a living and this will fix your problem. Uninstall both Firefox and NIS will only take approx 15 min. Is there any reason you are ignoing my suggestion when there is another thread just like your in which the person listen to me and the problem was fixed. Why live it the way it is. Its very easily fixable.
