Guys, be so kind and help me. I've just instaled NIS 2011 on my win xp system. The products works fine but the I have one ugly problem with right click menu glitch. I have a win xp sp 2 system. On my win 7 laptop I found no such problem. And the problem is: when I right click on the desktop icon or in My computer the right click menu looks terrible. The Norton icon is seperated from the text. As a result of that the menu is distorted. Please check my screenshots.
Of course the problem started after I installed NIS 2011. I checked the forum for help. Found nothing decisive. Will be utmost grateful for any fix to this.
We can't see your screen shots until they are approved by the moderators. It would be a good idea if you updated your XP computer to SP3. You are missing out on a lot of protection and updates by not having these updates. It's possible that the fix for your problem might be in those missing updates even though it says that the minimum requirements is sp 2 for XP. Is there any reason why you haven't updated to SP3?
Also what version of NIS are you running please? Do you have any other real time security program installed in that xp computer? Thanks.
Woow Thank you for such quick reply. Im also using Spyboot Search & Destroy. I have genuine win xp and I didn't upgrade to sp3 just because I heard few bad opinions about it ;) I have NIS 2011 vers 18.5.0.125. Im not using any other security program.
You should really update to sp3. Any bad things you heard about it might have been when it first came out. Since you only have sp 2 now, you are missing out in all the protection that you should be receiving. Before installing NIS 2011, please make sure that Tea Timer is turned off like Allen mentioned. Before you installed NIS 2011, did you remove Avast using the control panel method and then reboot? You would also need to use the removal tool from Avast and run it like 2 times to make sure that is completely removed. If you had Tea Timer on during this process, most likely you didn't get a clean uninstall of Avast and you probably didn't get a clean install of NIS 2011 either. Thanks.
Thank you guys for help. I followed your suggestions and installed all latest patches including sp3. None of this helped to right click menu issue.
To make things worse sp3 turned off my cool n quite option (2cores of proccessor running at 3000mhz, cooler getting loud) so I had to get rid off it. Untill I find good solution to sp3 vs cool n quiet I will stick to sp2.
But I found solution to my problem! I simply removed ZipItFast Comporesss option from right click menu by editing register. It solved the issue. Now everything looks nice (check screenshot)
So the problem is not really into NIS 2011 - as I initially thought - but the system.
It's a partial victory though as I would like to have sp3 now. Hopefully at AMD I will find latest cool n quiet drivers dedicated to this issue. After that I will get back to sp3.
I have more questions though :) How to speed up sp3 installation? Im asking cause it took sooo much time to upgrade it.
I mean how to completetly stop NIS from working during the sp3 installation? Do you ahve any tips?
Thanks for the feedback -- this is not the first time that a third party programming error has upset the context menu in a way that made it seem Norton was the culprit. It happened when N360 V2 came out and RMC in Windows Explorer crashed that application ....
Turned out to be an error in the PowerDesk file manager (which also crashed like Explorer) for which they had issued a fix but not circulated users, which I and others were.
I nearly posted a reference to that earlier and perhaps it would have led ot checking thirdparty programs.
I use an AMD CPU and ASUS mobo with the Quiet fan utility which is absolutely great -- I can't hear my desktop which is 2 feet from my ears and has 2 case fans, PSU fan and CPU fan .....
