RIP PSI (Secunia/Flexera)

Courtesy of Maurice Joyce, the top expert in their old Secunia community:

Flexera have just announced that the PSI programme you may still have installed on your PC will become End of Life on the 20th April. There are no plans to replace it therefore it is best removed from your PC.

To the best of my knowledge there is no alternative programme available that can replace the output of PSI but there are programmes that come very close this being one:

In their parting shot Flexera offer the following advice:

For users looking to continue to keep their PCs safe, we suggest to use software best practices:

. Turn on automatic updating of all software that support it (e.g. Windows, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, iTunes, Quicktime).

. Always manually run updates on those applications that don't update automatically.

. Remember to restart your computers for changes to take effect.

. Uninstall software that's not in use, and search for updates for software you maintain.

VulnDetect have released a Tech Preview of their PSI replacement.

The Tech Preview is out...

Well, just remember, it is a "preview", so not even alpha stage yet.

You can install the SecTeer Personal CARMA. It will register an account. It will start communicating with the back-end. It will do a scan (once it is time).

The part about when the CARMA does the scan, that may seem a bit annoying, but we need to test the scheduling. We will implement something more responsive later (and we should be able to do this without you having to reinstall).

The result you will get, will be limited, CARMA detects around 20 different pieces of software now and only reports that the software is installed.

Next step will be to add more specific rules, that will report versions.

Then we will start adding update / security / EoL information.

We are working on a better and nicer looking UI and we will also work on the information we display in the "Applications" list.

We did also not publish the Privacy / Data Processing Policy, that is due in a day or two. It will be GDPR compliant, except you can't delete your data yet, but that is implemented in the backend and is mostly a UI thing, so it is coming soon.

You can get the Tech Preview of the SecTeer Personal CARMA here:

https ://carma.secteer.com/dl/secteerSetup.exe

And you can login here:
https ://carma.secteer.com/personal-carma/

All it requires is a valid email and a recent version of Windows.

And, you may want to know who you are dealing with; this site is sponsored and operated by SecTeer. SecTeer is incorporated in Denmark, founded by Dofri, Michael and Thomas. We all three held key positions at Secunia, Michael and I (Thomas / Tom) were also founders of Secunia. We left before it was acquired by Flexera. You can read more about the team behind CARMA at https://secteer.com/about/

I will post more later today and tomorrow and...

Happy testing

/Tom

Welcome to VulnDetect the alternative to the Secunia PSI which will "die" on 20th April 2018

Just like you, we used to love the Secunia PSI and have been sad to see it wither away during the past years.

And now it seems it will be no more, RIP Secunia PSI.

For some time we have been working on an alternative, which will detect vulnerable and End-of-Life software and of course suggest the latest version available of the vulnerable software.

Naturally, the VulnDetect will become an awesome product, eventually!

But first we have to start with the basics and will initially provide a rudimentary solution for you to test and provide us feedback

We would therefore be happy to hear from you:

  • What did you like in the Secunia PSI?
  • What could be better?
  • What was always missing?

The VulnDetect, as the name implies, is intended to detect vulnerable software and in turn also End-of-Life software.

Please send an email to vulndetect [ at ] vulndetect.com and we will keep you informed with any news and updates. Don't worry, we will not share your info with anyone and you may chose to opt-out at any time.

You are also most welcome to register with this forum and start discussing the new VulnDetect and everything you wanted to change about the Secunia PSI.

/The VulnDetect Team

Very sad to hear PSI has reached its EOL.  Martin Brinkmann has recommended a few alternatives to PSI in his 11-Mar-2018 ghacks.net article Secunia Retires Personal Software Inspector (PSI).

I've been using the FileHippo App Manager v1.47 mentioned in that ghacks.net article for several years to supplement PSI.  It's a small app that scans in just a few seconds and looks for available updates for a larger number of apps than the 20-25 covered by Heimdahl Free, and it's also compatible with Win XP and Vista.  FileHippo App Manager doesn't have automated updating (which I don't mind since I never used that feature in PSI) and it's not always 100% accurate (e.g., it keeps nagging me to update my Firefox ESR v52.7.0  to Firefox v59.0 because the 32-bit executable for both update channels is firefox.exe) so I've configured it to ignore beta releases and use it for a quick and dirty check to ensure all my third-party programs are patched.  I don't normally use installers from download sites like FileHippo, MajorGeeks, etc. just in case they're bundled with PUPs but the download page for each software program listed on FileHippo has a Technical tab that includes a link to the manufacturer's site.

32-bit Vista Home Premium SP2 * Firefox ESR v52.7.0 * NS Premium v22.12.1.15 * PSI v3.0.0.11005

Sad news indeed!
