Router firewall blocking Liveupdate from running

Yesterday I upgraded the firmware on my linksys router and ever since I have not been able to run liveupdater.  The firewall is obviously blocking it from running (because if it is plugged directly into the modem it works), and I was wondering if there were any suggestions on fixing this such as port numbers etc... I don't know if this is a common problem or not, but maybe an administrator can give me some suggestions too on this.  Thanks

I have already checked through the settings and nothing has worked at all... I even turned off the firewall and that still didn't do anything.  The strange thing is that before the firmware upgrade, liveupdater was able to connect properly.  My router does not have DOS settings that I can get to.

COnfused am I. If your outer does not display DOS settings then you could not have checked through them. Some routers have hidden pages to access firewall settings. Worth searching the internet or asking their tech support.

However, if you have turned off the firewall and that did not work, it sounds like an issue with the firewall.

Sorry I cant help further.

Thanks for trying to help me.  There is a possibility that the update corrupted  the firewall from being set correctly.  I checked again for a setting for DOS and the only thing there is, is to turn on and off dos protection, but not configure that setting.

Could be so many things. If you can get support for the router its worth trying, may be a setting, maybe it needs reflashing or resetting to factory defaults. Why not give us the model number. Try to disable DOS for 5 mins and see if that works. Alas I cant suggest anything else.

The model number on my router is Linksys WRT110.  I will give that a try and see if that works.  I'm just kind of curious because the only thing that is getting blocked by the firewall is norton and nothing else.  If an admin sees this they may have the correct port numbers that Liveupdater uses, and I could try to allow the ports in the firewall.

Thanks for sending me the link.  I did some research and found this myself, however for some reason those ports did not allow Liveupdater to pass through.  I am thinking that there may be different ports for N360 and for antivirus 2010, even though it seems that they would be the same because they are practically the same product.

If you are still having problems then do a hard reset on your router.  There should be a small pin hole in the back of the unit; depress the switch inside with a paper clip (or similar object) for ten seconds and then release.  You may have to go into the router setup once again to enter you ISP information (user name, logon passwords, account information, etc.) after the reset.

Firmware updates for routers are very prone to change the firewall behavior and rules processing.

So I have tried a router reset, and that has not taken care of the problem.  I also have asked linksys if there was a way to downgrade software and no luck.  I am wondering if a glitch in the software is causing this incompatibility issue that I am facing.  I may have to look and see if I have a warranty left.  If anyone has anymore suggestions, that would be great!

Have you tried reapplying the firmware upgrade?

Why can linksys not get you up and running. What is their explanation?

I have tried to reapply the update and that didn't do anything.  I called linksys and they couldn't help me and said that I should call an online based tech support (which i didn't do).  If anyone has the updated port numbers for N360 please post them.

Also is there an alternative server that i could switch to?

What is your operating system and service pack level?

I am running Windows Xp sp3 and the other computer is Vista and it is running SP2.

It seems a common problem with Linksys and firmware updates.  Their support forum has this to offer which helped some of the users.  It seems to be just a longer procedure than that suggested by dbrisendine.

"After every firmware upgrade you must hard reset the router and reconfigure it.  Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds and release.  Wait 30 seconds and now power cycle the router.  Once complete connect via your wired computer to 192.168.1.1 user name blank, password admin.  Now reconfigure your router and wireless settings and test."

Another suggestion was to reset the modem as well as the router.

These instructions may also help, at least for the XP mchine.

Getting association

This Linksys forum also has a large number of users with the WRT110.  There may be some information there that will assist you.

Thanks for the suggestions.  This issue was not one that I could fix.  I have a friend who owns a computer business look at it, and he said that there was no way to fix it and that the router had problems itself.  If anyone else has a similar problem, the only way to fix it is to get a warranty replacement.  Also another piece of advice is to not update the firmware unless there are problems with the router that the update would fix.  Thanks for everyone's help on trying to help me fix this issue!
