"Using advanced website capture and playback technology, they subjected nine popular security products (including Microsoft Security Essentials) to this test on systems with Windows Update not active. They also tested fully patched Windows 7 with no antivirus and with MSE. The top score, 292 of 300 possible points, went to Norton Internet Security (2014). Windows 7 alone scored negative 244, MSE on an unpatched system got negative 42. The combination of Windows 7 and MSE managed to climb out of below-zero scores, with 128 points.

Next they updated all of the test systems with the very latest Windows 7 patches and re-ran the exact same test. All of the security products scored better. Norton earned a perfect 300 points this time around.  AVG AntiVirus FREE 2014 was still the lowest-scoring non-Microsoft product, but its score climbed from 88 to 208."
