I've been getting a bunch of these on my Norton Recent History thingy, at least 100 a day. I'm not sure it means or what it's doing to my computer but can you guys help?
should I put the information here?
Hi TuRmoiLxx,
Is the IP address 192.168.x.x? If so that is either your router or some other device like an XBox or something on your Local Area Network. When UPnP is enabled on any device it will do an occasional "Shout Out" to say "I'm here" to any other device that might be listening. This is very likely what the firewall is detecting. You can stop these events by going into your router (or other device) configuration settings and turning off Universal Plug n Play.
I am guessing that this is probably your router as delphinium suggests, because if your network was set up to share among other devices the Norton Smart Firewall would configure itself to allow, rather than block, this UPnP traffic. UPnP is often used among devices on a local network, but Norton blocks it for your protection if sharing is not enabled.
Hey Jive,
No, its not 192.xx.xx.xx or something like that it's 239.255.xx.xx, I do have an XBox and a Router. I'm not sure if the 239.255.xx.xx may be the XBox or anything like that, thanks for the help though.
If you look at the link that I gave you again, you will see the same 239.255.x.x. The user found that it was his default gateway (the router).

Most home routers use the 192.168.x.x block of private IP addresses. However, 239.255.x.x is an administratively scoped multicast IP address, which is still a private network address used for multicast communications, which is exactly what a UPnP "Shout Out" is. Whether it is the router or your XBox, it is still a local communication among your own devices. Having UPnP enabled on your devices allows the XBox to open ports in the router that it needs without bothering you about it.

So basically I'm safe? I don't have any viruses or anything like that, thats making the UPnp thingy pop up? I recently scanned my computer so I think I'm secure.
You are safe. You can always turn off UPnP in the router settings if you want to confirm that that is the source of the traffic (you can re-enable it if this causes connectivity problems for the XBox). UPnP is ubiquitous and is used by all sorts of devices that connect to your router or PC, so it is not an indication of a virus. I'm sure this is local, so you are not being attacked. The default rule in the firewall is blocking the traffic anyway, so any way you look at it, you are safe. You are seeing log entries that simply record what Norton is doing. This is not the same thing as an alert, where you would be notified if a serious issue was detected that needed your attention.
Thanks for the help. Mind if I add you as a friend if thats an option >.> ?
