Safe Search Not Working

Operating system  : Windows 7 SP1

Web Browser       : IE10 and Chrome 32.0.1700.107m

Win7 Account      : Standard

Norton Family     : 2.6.0.73

Norton Anti Virus : 19.9.1.14

I have had Norton Family installed on our family PC for about two years.

In the Norton Family settings for my son, Search supervision is set to On and Content Filtering for the Top Search Engines is set to Yes.

It use to work okay however I recently noticed that safe search is no longer working on my son's account.

It use to block inappropriate searches within Goggle. However it now allows these searches and gives a list of inappropriate websites. Norton family still blocks access to these websites but the goggle search list includes inappropriate text describing each web site, which is not good.

The situation is worse for YouTube. Inappropriate searches can be made and the content can be viewed.

This problem occurs for both IE10 and Chrome 32.0.1700.107m.

This problem occurs for Goggle, YouTube, Bing and probably other search sites.

Has anyone else had similar problems ?

Can anyone suggest a solution ?

Thanks

Richard

'For now, please select the option “Use strict filter” for Google’s SafeSearch Filtering under “Search settings” link at Google page http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en to see if it helps.'

This is exactly the wrong way to do this.

If I do it this way I have to do it twelve times. Two kids, two browsers and three sites (goggle, youtube and bing) thus 2 x 2 x 3 = 12.

Then there is the problem of me turning the filtering on and my kids turning it off.

In the Norton Family settings for search it states :-

Content Filtering for the Top Search Engines

Google, Ask, YouTube, Yahoo, Bing, and Blinkx have filtering options that prevent explicit adult-oriented content from appearing in search results. Clicking Yes to turn on all of those providers’ filtering options for your child.

Does this search filtering feature of Norton Family still work or has it been discontinued ?

Thanks Richard

Hi,

We will check into this.

Thanks,

Katie

I tried uninstalling my current version of norton family (2.6.0.73) and installing the latest version of norton family (2.9.5.26).

I used the win 7 control panel to do the uninstall. This seemed to go okay.

However when I tried to install the latest version of norton family the norton download manager keeps failing and asks me to 'click retry to continue your install'.

I tried turning off my firewall and my norton anti virus but this did not help.

This is going from bad to worse. Please help me.

Thanks
Richard

Hi richard911,

Can you please go to C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Norton\{NF22-B22-4abb-B07C-CXXXXXXXXX} (the last part {} entry is diffferent on your PC from the sample) and try to install Norton Family again?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi,

I went to :-

C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Norton\{NF29526-PROD-FSD40014}

and clicked on NF_Installer.exe

It did not help. It failed in the same way as before.

Are there any known problems with the Norton Family installer ?

Thanks
Richard

Hi richard 911,

After you delete the folder, can you please go back to Norton Family online and download Norton Family from the website?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi

Folder :-

C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Norton\

Contained the following two folders :-

 {NF29526-PROD-FSD40014}

 {NSME22-B22-4abb-B07C-C084B04B4F12}

The first folder was from trying to install the latest version of norton family.
The second folder was dated 2012 and is from my old version of norton family.

I deleted them both and went back to Norton Family online to install norton family again.

It did not work. It still stops part way and the Norton Download Manager gives me the option to 'Cancel Install' or to
'Retry'. When I retry it just stops again and asks me to cancel or retry.

The following folder is also present on my system :-

C:\Program Files (x86)\NortonInstaller\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}

It is dated 2012 and I believe it is from my norton anti virus.

Should I delete this folder ?

Folder 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NortonInstaller' also includes lots of files with names like :-

NSM_mini_00ADF6EE7C184B118D5815219AC86BA2.7z

Should I delete the 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NortonInstaller' folder ?

Thanks
Richard

Hi richard911,

Please don't delete anything for Norton AntiVirus.  I'll get back to you.

Thanks

Katie

Hi richard911,

Could you collect FSD logs from the machine?  If you have any questions to do so, please let me know.

They are generally present at C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Norton and the filenames start with “FSDUI-”.

Please create a new folder and copy all such files  to the new folder, then zip the folder, and email this to me.   You can find my email address under my Profile on the forum.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi KatieQ,

Norton Anti Virus allowed me to do a free update to 21.1.1.7

I was then able to install norton family 2.9.5.29

This seems to be working okay and now blocks the searches that were the problem I originally reported in my first post.

Thanks
Richard
