I installed Norton anti theft and Norton security on my phone and now my battery rapidly drains, how do I fix this
Hi zenwolf.
Welcome to the community.
You message implies that before you installed these two apps your battery usage was low and that now with just these two added it is high. If this is the case then I would be surprised as I do not think anyone else has reported it. If this is the case, may I suggest that you post details of the phone you are using, the version of Android and the versions of the two apps.
However you may like to look at the actual battery usage of your phone which you can probably get to from: Menu: Settings: About phone: Battery use. Just checking this myself, the only Norton app that is shown is Norton Security at 2% which hardly seems too worrying. In my case the main user it Voice Calls at 70%!
What does yours show?
Dear Andmike;
I have version 2.3.4 android, and the android system is what uses the most battery at 70% and it doesn't even list Norton in the battery use file.
What settings did you configure in NMS and NAT? Did you change any of the default settings? Have you changed the discovery interval for NAT on the antitheft web portal?
Dear zenwolf.
Then why do you think it is Norton draining your battery?
My Nexus S with 2.3.6 has recently started to have the same problem.
I have had this installed for a couple of months and I have not changed any NAT settings and now it is showing NAT using 72%!
What's the update frequency set for NAT? Go to http://antitheft.norton.com and check for your device. Try decreasing the frequency and see what that does to the usage. It's possible that NAT is having difficulty getting a location fix leading to it using Location Services more.
It was set at 1 hour so I dropped it to 3 hours.
However, my point was that NAT has worked fine and that I have not changed anything and then all of the sudden in the past week or so my battery has started being drained by NAT.
Therefore, has something changed in latest update to NAT to cause this? I think this is where we should be looking.
Any ideas around when this started? The last update was over a month ago, so it could be something different entirely.
I wish I knew exactly when it started, sorry.
Changing the NAT setting from 1 to 3 hours has changed the batter usage from 72% to 60%.
Then your device might be using a lot of juice when NAT checks in and finds the device location. Do you have GPS on? Are you in a building or near a window? Do you have Wifi enabled?
Do you have GPS on?
Yes
Are you in a building or near a window?
Yes
Do you have Wifi enabled?
No
Again, none of my settings have changed from when I had no battery usage problems to now.
There's a good chance that getting the location is taking longer. You might try enabling Wifi (don't have to connect, just enable). Location Services can use both the GPS and Wifi to better refine your location. It might help in getting your location faster. Another option would be to increase the location interval to it's maximum value and check usage.
WiFi is only good if you are connected to a WiFi network.
Since the phone is connected to 3G, why would you need WiFi?
Also, the WiFi here uses a 3G router so connecting to it would be redundant.
Running at the highest setting sort of defeats the purpose of NAT.
I think I will try the usual solution for Symantec products and un-install/re-install it.
Let me step back and explain a little bit. Location Services (within the device) uses multiple data points to determine your location. These are the GPS radio, Cell towers (phone and data), and Wifi signals. You can end up with varying signal strengths that can impact the accuracy of the location.
So, the recommendation is to make sure Wifi is "on" in settings, but not to connect via Wifi.
Why do you think changing the checkin frequency defeats the purpose of NAT? If you can't find the device, you can decrease the frequency at any time. For locking the device or using the Sneak Peek feature the checkin value is moot as these are initiated manually.
So we can try to reproduce the battery issues, what's the version of Android that you have on your device? You can find this in Settings > About Phone.

If you lose your phone you want to know where it is ASAP. You don't want to wait 12 hrs. for the next update on its location. By then the battery might be dead.

Hi Beavis8.
As it is the weekend and Erik may be spending time with his family I will post response.
I think the idea about decreasing the frequency was that if NAT is causing a constant battery drain then decreasing the frequency might help you. If you loose your phone then you can go online and increase the checking frequency at any point. If you can't go online to increase the frequency then neither can you use NAT to locate the phone.
However now that you have provided the background data I am sure the team will review the situation and see if the battery drain issue can be addressed.
Thanks for the information. I've passed it along to development.
Just to clarify, the frequency settings are for normal usage only. When you lock the device you'll see the following:
![]() |
Lock your device to protect your personal information. |

Track the location of your device more frequently. |
![]() |
Use your device's camera to take pictures of who has the device and where it is. |

You can create a message that will appear on your device to assist in retrieval. |
I have a Samsung Epic 4g with GingerBread.EL30
I installed the mobile security and antitheft. I made no modifications to the default settings.
After installing I noticed the battery, which was lasting all day, suddenly would be dead by 1:00. I see the GPS icon constantly pinging.
I work in an office building where I can not get GPS signal.
I do not have wifi on, nor is there wifi available here.
I have my GPS on normally and the battery doesn't drain.
Seems the program constantly sends a where am i signal, and never gives up. maybe it should try x many times, and the reset and try again the next hour.
I just wanted to give an update. The team has identified that this can happen on some devices and knows why this is happening. There is some work involved to correct this, but once corrected we will be sending out an update for the NAT plugin that will fix this. I don't have a date as to when this will be fixed, but we are actively working to correct this. Thank you for reporting this and I apologize for the problems that this is creating.
