"Scan already running"

This is my first posting on this message board, and I confess I am completely fed up with Norton 360.

At present my laptop has the message "Scan already running", so I cannot do Live Update.  This has been the case for over an hour, and I am not happy with this. Does anybody know how to find out what Norton is up to?

On the desktop I moved to Thunderbird when Microsoft advised me that my address book was too large for Outlook Express.  However Norton does not support Thunderbird.  Does anybody know of a workaround to enable Norton to function adequately with Thunderbird?

If JohnA's CTRL+ALT+DEL does not bring up Task Manager for you try CTRL+SHIFT+ESC which since NT is the official keyboard shortcut for Task Manager! Something I did not know until the old three fingered salute did not work for me and I asked around.

What version of Windows are you running including service packs and which version of Norton 360 is it V1 or V2 and what version ID (Help / About nn.nn.nn.nn ) ?

Many thanks for this.  In the event, before I received your suggestion, I had rebooted the computer.  Now the scan is not running!  So some progress may have been made.

However, the backup facility has been lost.  Norton fails to find my functional external hard drive.  The last time this happened I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling Norton, on advice from Norton support.

I am just waiting till the licence expires before changing from Norton, because of the lack of support for Thunderbird.

You might want to keep in touch since support for browsers is not set in stone.

What aspect of Norton (I take it n360 V2) is it that you find is not supported with Thunderbird? I ask because in searching on "Thunderbird" here I don't find any references to Norton not working with Thunderbird -- only that the Norton AntiSpam is not fully featured which sounds like my experience with NIS prior to NIS 2009 where it worked for both my users but the toolbar icon did not move when you used Fast User Switching to go from one user's desktop to the other -- it only was fully featured for the first user to log on; if he logged off then the second user got the full features. Also at present Norton's not fully featured with Windows Live Mail eg in VISTA.

Perhaps you could clarify where you are in all this!

And also have you thought of trying NIS 2009 where the antispam is integral with the program and not part of an add-on. This will be the case in Norton 360 V3 which is beta now and should be coming out before too long.

So as I said it's not set in stone.

Hi PRSanford,

I'm not sure what version of Norton 360 you are running but it sounds like the same thing that I have experienced in the past. Just as a side note N360 may run automated tasks when the computer system is idle. Depending on the system configuration and size of the hard drive tasks such as disk optimization and a full system scan may take some time to complete.

Whenever my system appears to be stuck in 'scan already in progress' rebooting has always cleared that message.

If I wish to run LiveUpdate without rebooting I use the file named luall.exe which is part of Norton.

It does not appear you had the need or the chance to utilize the suggested work arounds for the 'scan already in progress'. Should you try the suggestions that have been posted previous to this message and it not be successful there are a couple of other message threads that have been discussed for this same issue, although from what I have read thus far I do not think you will need to use the solution that is in the other thread as it is a little more 'to do'. If I end up being incorrect please post back and let us know.

Finally, as has been stated N360 V3 is due out in the near future and is a free upgrade as long as your subscription is current at the time of the wide release which should have new features as well as 'fixes' for known issues in version 2.

Take care,

Many thanks for this.  I will download N360 v3 when it is available.  With v2, anti Spam is unresponsive.  In Thuderbird it filters out many messages wrongly and will not accept correction.

The other major problem with v2 is the backup.  It only backs up particular types of files.  With v1 you could include whole folders in the backup, but v2 saves even these selctively.  Therefore, many of my files (such as Open Office and Lotus) are not included in a backup. I backup manually, and only permit Norton to save my address book for the purposes of keeping the green tick icon on the toolbar.

I meant to try the Beta version of N360 V3 that is available here to the public -- it must be getting pretty near its final stages by now and it would give you an idea of whether it was the solution (and see below about backups)

With the addition of what you say about backups I wonder if you should not be considering switching from Norton 360 -- which is intended for the fit and forget user who can live with the way it works -- to NIS 2009 and getting a third party backup solution that you can tailor to exactly to your own needs?

You might try NIS 2009 which you can download and try free:

New NIS 2009: Click on this link NIS 2009

and if it works better for you in the areas it deals with then talk with Customer Support to see if you can get a free KEY for NIS 2009 and abandon N360. Since N360 is more expensive maybe they would give you a longer subscription! I've heard of this happening when N360 would not work for the user. And in any case Norton have a 60 day warranty if you are still within that -- I forget.

Many thanks.  I will take this to be the solution!

I would have suggested not to flag it until you've tried it!

The real solution will be when Norton expands the coverage of the add-on I guess.
