Have a Win 8 laptop with Norton 360 . Noticed that quick scan was taking more than usual and was stopped with BackDoor.Rustock.A. When I did a full scan same issue , tried in safe mode - same issue .. any suggestions ?

Scans stalling or stopping can indicate an issue with the hard drive. Even a new HD can have issues.
To check your hard disk, you need to open a cmd window.Find cmd.exe. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r" without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.
Let us know if there are errors found.
zcorpi,
When you said "stopped" can you give a rough idea of how long you waited?
I know that when I install a new copy of Norton and run the first quick scan it pauses on that Rustock item and another for what seems like ages but it did go on and complete the scan and report all OK.
