Scanning a download

How do I scan a downloaded file in Windows 11? In Win 10 I would right click on the file and choose scan with Norton. I just tried that with the new install of Windows 11 and nothing happens. Norton does not scan it or react in any way.
I have always depended on that to keep me safe.
Please help.

Hello @NiagaraMouse

Are you reporting Scan selected items for viruses does not scan/react?

Hello @NiagaraMouse
Sorry, I forgot… my preferred setting

Please confirm Scan from Windows Explorer → Scan all archives is enabled

Caveat: my preferred setting is Scan all archives

Thanks, however, I also unzipped it and Norton is still not scanning the unzipped file.

Hello again @NiagaraMouse

Hmm…anyway I can get that zipped sample? PM me.
Does the sample have bytes?
Can you upload sample to VirusTotal?

Maybe, sample is malformed?
Can you test another sample?

Does Explorer Scan report on other files?

I don’t know how to Scan from Windows Explorer, I just switched to Windows 11 from Windows 10 and I am trying to figure out how to make things work properly. Can you tell me how to get to where I can select “scan all archives”?
Also I did try VirusTotal and it found 1 malware

Scan all archives is Norton setting. Norton 360 → Settings → Scans

Explorer Scan → Settings

scroll down → Scan all archives → Save

Thanks
Norton 360 → Explorer Scan may not report on (zipped) archived files.
I’ve not tested…v24+…as I recall.

Please post your progress

The “scan all archives” was already selected. Just to be clear, I did unzip the file and Norton did nothing on the unzipped file.
Do I need to contact Norton Support to get it to work properly?

If VirusTotal could scan it then Norton should have been able to.

Does Explorer Scan → Scan selected... report on another (.exe .zip) file?
Please confirm whether Explorer Scan reports on any scannable file?
Please confirm whether File Insight reports on any scannable file?

Please download Norton 360 Remover file here and try Scan selected... & File Insight against this sample.

Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine

If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

Download and run the Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here

Maybe, try Troubleshooting → Record a performance issue &or Enable/Send debug logs

May be best to Contact Norton Support

Here is the link to the file I downloaded: https://win7games.com/download/Windows7Games_for_Windows_11_10_8.zip
Perhaps you can download it and then see if your Norton will scan it?

I just saw this last response of yours and I tried scanning a pdf file, also an exe and a msi and Norton does not respond. So I will follow your suggestions, it seems to me that the switch from Win 10 to Win 11 may have caused some problems.

Thank you bjm for your much appreciated help.
