Hello @PaulJ_Markey
In Norton 360 v24+ (the latest 2026 interface), the ability to precisely schedule a backup to a specific “exact time” has been removed in favor of an automated sync model.
Unlike previous versions, the v24+ backup system operates on a fixed 24-hour cycle that runs automatically based on when the computer is idle and the previous cycle was completed.
Limitations of Local Backup in v24+
No Time Drop-down: The “When” tab no longer features a start-time selector for daily backups.
Manual Intervention for Local: While Cloud Backup runs on the 24-hour cycle, local backups to external drives in v24 often require you to manually trigger them.
Automatic Sync: The default “Automatic” setting is now the primary method, which syncs files every 24 hours without a user-defined start hour.
The Only Way to Control Timing in 2026
If you need a backup to run at a precise time (e.g., 3:00 AM daily), you cannot do it through the Norton v24 interface. You must use the Windows Task Scheduler:
Open the Windows Task Scheduler by typing “Task Scheduler” in the Windows search bar.
Create a Basic Task and set the Trigger to “Daily” with your exact desired time.
For the Action, set “Start a program.”
Browse to the Norton backup executable (typically located in C:\Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\[version]\buui.exe or similar).
In the Conditions tab, you can check “Wake the computer to run this task” if you want it to run while the PC is asleep.
==========================================
In Norton 360 v24 (the 2025/2026 version), Norton has removed the ability to schedule backups at an exact time. The new interface operates on an automatic 24-hour cycle that triggers when the system is idle.
While version 22 allowed for precise “Start Time” configuration via the “When” tab, version 24 has replaced this with a simplified “Automatically Sync” model.
Backup Limitations in v24
No Specific Clock-Time Scheduling: You cannot currently select a specific hour (e.g., 3:00 AM) for automatic daily backups.
24-Hour Cycle: Automatic backups typically run once every 24 hours when the computer is idle and connected to the internet.
“…The ability to precisely schedule a backup to a specific “exact time” has been removed in favor of an automated sync model“.
Really?
Under who’s infinite wisdom was this basic task removed? I presume it was the corporate flunkies at Norton/Symantec who imposed this “improvement”, taking care of their internal cost saving prerogatives rather than the needs of their clients. I.e., middle managers paying for their vacation homes rather than than helping their customers.
Decades ago Norton was a slick, fast-moving start-up with a smart idea. Now they’re an institutionalized battleship that monitors quarterly profits more than improving their product. This sort of decline is studied in business schools, in the class titled “Lifecyle-Arc of Corporate Enterprise”. Symantec/Norton is well into the sunset/final chapter.

While IDrive is primarily known for cloud storage, its local backup feature is a free utility built into the desktop application that allows you to back up data to an external hard drive, USB, or mapped network drive without a paid subscription.
Key Features of IDrive Local Backup:
Unlimited Data: Unlike cloud backups, local backups are only limited by the size of your own physical storage drives, not your 10GB IDrive account quota.
Flexible Scheduling: You can set backups to run daily, on specific days of the week, or at a particular start time.
Automation Options: It includes features like email notifications for success/failure, “cut-off times” to stop backups at a certain hour, and the ability to automatically start missed backups when the computer is turned on.
Versioning: It supports file versioning for local backups (storing up to 28 versions by default on Windows).
Encryption: Local backups are secured with 256-bit AES encryption.
How to Set Up Scheduled Local Backups:
Open the App: Log in to the IDrive desktop application.
Select Local Backup: Click the Backup tab and select the Local Backup radio button.
Choose Destination: Click the “…” or “Backup location” section to select your external or network drive.
Select Files: Click Modify to choose which folders or files to include in the local backup set.
Schedule: Click the Schedule button to set your desired days and times, then click Save Changes.
