Script interfering with Forum

I have Win XP SP3 and IE8 (IE above that is not comparible with XP). I also have NIS 2012 v. 19.9.1.14.  I do not usually have cookies switched on and hitherto I have browsed this forum with no problems. However today I opened the forum and a popup appeared:

"Stop running this script?
A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly.  If it continues to run your computer might become unresponsive.
Yes/ No"

I clicked "Yes" to stop it but found that it reappeared every time I opened a post and still seemed to interfere and slow everything down considerably.  The first pop up appearing each time when opening the forum seemed to coincide with:

"Downloading picture https:/ extended-validation- ssl.verisigncom/dot_clear.gif."

I have run a full Norton scan, MBAM and NPE with no risks found. I also tried compatibility mode without good result.

I have now discovered that if I switch cookies on I get none of this and  can browse the forum with no trouble at all as before.  It appears to be something Norton is doing and I am interested to know what it is because it's a nuisance.

Hi Imbart

You might like to try live chat with a Norton representative, click on the link below.  Let us know how you get on, as some of the users on this forum are more techie than me.

Thank you for your interest, intesec.  I was hoping an expert or employee might give the answer as a reply. I don't really want to get involved in live chat with a Norton employee which from what I have read on this forum often leads nowhere. Even if no one knows the answer I'm OK as long as I remember to switch cookies on. I notice that the download I mention above which Norton must know about is connected to an https (security) URL  so maybe that is something to do with the need for cookies.

I have now tested this several times on  a Win 7 with IE9.  What happens there is that all is well while cookies are on but switch them off and something different happens - the Forum won't open at all and IE9 hangs. There is no script alert as on XP IE8 (above).  Switch cookies on again and no problem at all.  Can Norton sort it out please or explain what is happening.

Hi imbart,

I'm having same issue since 2-3 days on a Win 8 Pro with IE10 and NIS 20.3.1.22

No script alert but if I don't change web page on a short time, IE10 keep all memory and system crash.

Any help or explanation will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sandro

Glad to hear it is not just me, sandro_cm.  Each computer mentioned (different OSs and IEs) seems to have a slightly different glitch affecting this forum and not sure if yours is the same as mine but, as I explained, in my two cases the annoyances only occur if I set my cookies to "blocked" in Internet Options. If cookies are set to be used there is no problem but I am not sure if this is a deliberate Norton change or a Norton error which is why I posted..

Thanks for the reply imbart,

I can assure you that we are both having the same issue, me too enabling cookies the issue doesn't occur.
The reaction of IE and the OS is different probably because we are using different OS and different versions of IE.
You are using Win XP and Win 7 with IE8 while I'm using Win 8 with IE10.
What I can tell you is that I don't think Symantec has changed something, usually when cookies are required to view a web page a pop-up should appear warning us that cookies must be enabled to access the page, or a warning should appear as

"this page can not be displayed" but this not should crash IE as well the OS.
Symantec should investigate to see if the issue is caused by their software (N360/NIS/NAV).
I also kindly ask if any user could try to reproduce the issue by disabling cookies and let us know their results.

Thanks to anyone who wants to enter into this discussion.
Sandro

If you are seeing issues on the forum, it is not Norton’s issue. Norton uses the services of Lithium for the forums.

Admins here will see these posts and pass along the info to Lithium. The more info you can provide about this issue, the easier it will be to diagnose the problem.

I think for now, there is enough info to get things started. If more is needed, the admins will ask.
