My sister acquired a used Samsung laptop about a week ago which I performed a factory restore on. Apparently this system came bundled with a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security. I don't use Norton myself, had some bad experiences with it in the past, but figured what the heck let's see how it does.
Today she called me saying something popped up on her browser asking if she wanted to change her search engine to Norton Safe Search, should she say yes? I figured, sounds like a good idea. Then she called me back a few minutes later saying her screen was full of warning messages telling her to call a tech support number and she couldn't get rid of them.
I went to her place and was able to reproduce the exact results. At the Norton Safe Search home page, type "Hotmail sign in" into the search and then choose the top result that comes up. It ended up hijacking the browser to a site called pcfreetuneup.com or something and the warning message pops up. This is using Internet Explorer 11
What the heck? The search result even has the little green Norton OK picture beside it ... this is insane. I hope Norton doesn't expect a new customer based on this experience with the trial edition.
Needless to say, I have removed the Norton Safe Search toolbar from her Internet Explorer, and switched her back to google.ca for a hompage.
