Issue abstract: Selecting files to scan
Detailed description: How do I direct Norton 360 for Windows to scan only specific files and folders?
Product & version number: Good question. I see no “Help About” or other way to determine the version number.
OS details: Windows 11
What is the error message you are seeing? None
If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:
Hello. Most likely you have version 24xx. Look at this settings area to define a custom scan.
Check your installed version on 24.xx

Not what I see. First of all, I don’t have a menu on the right like that in the window I get when I click the Norton toolbar icon.
Second, the “settings” don’t include “about”, nor do the appear in a tabbed format.
Third, when I pull down the “Device Security” button in image1, select “Scan Options” and then “Custom Scans”, I get six options. I tried to “edit” each. Only the second (“Full Scan”) and third (“Quick Scan”) show “Scan Items” but they are not modifiable.
I have images for each of these points but, even though the “reply” box initially says to drag or copy images into it, and there is a toolbar with an “upload” icon, when I try to upload my reply I get the message “An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post.”
Make sure you are not trying to upload a pdf file. The files that are accepted are .bmp, jpg, jpeg, png. Also. IF, you believe you do NOT have version 24.xx and are still on the previous version so this:
Check your Norton product version:
- Open your Norton device security product.
- In the main window, click Help. * top right corner
- In the Help Center window, under General Information, click About.
- The version is displayed next to Version, in the format 22.xx.x.xxx.

First of all, the files I was trying to upload were jpg or png files. Perhaps the problem is that I was trying to insert 3 of them. But it won’t even let me insert the first one. If I could you woudl see the following
Window split vertically
Left side headed “My Norton”, black background witt a button to run SmartScan and 6 icons on the right for “Protection Report”, “Feature Setup”, “Messages”, “Search”, “Help” and “Settings”.
In the right half it has a bar at the top to upgrade/manage devices, an area at the bottom telling me that 14 public sites that may be selling my info without my consent (i.e., selling protection) and a column of services: “Device Security”, “[Application] Software Updater”, “Dark Web Monitoring”, “Secure VPN”, “Cloud Backup” and “Password Manager”. I noted in my last post that I tried “Device Security” but am unable to define a selection of files or folders to scan (my initial question).
Note there is no place to click “Help” in the upper RH corner. If I click the “Help” icon on the left side I get a page which has no “General Information” on it but does have a search bar; if I enter, for example, “What version of Norton 360 do I have?” I get nothing remotely resembling an answer – at least not in the first 30 entries at which point I gave up.
I don’t see anything that enables me to follow your instructions thus far.
BUT the good news is, I was finally able to get an answer to my initial question from Chat Support. I spent I-don’t-know-how-much-time earlier just trying to get to the support function, I kept getting directed back into “what is your problem / here are potential answers” but finally broke through. Apparently my mistake was thinking I had to “edit” the scan to define it (select folders or files) when I really had to “run” it. Something with actual organized documentation or help would have led me to much more quickly.
Thanks for the post back.
