Settings won't save, RE uTorrent Crash Dumps

I've been having trouble running uTorrent in conjunction with my Norton Firewall. It's consistently causing crash dumps. I'd talked to a Norton Tech Support specialist who had changed my settings around, which helped temporarily, but the problem has returned. I've consulted the uTorrent forum where they outline Norton settings and rules that can be implemented to prevent such crashes (the instructions are here: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=7862).

However, part of the problem is that the settings aren't saving in my Norton Firewall/Antivirus. Every time I restart my computer, the program rules are reset to "Auto" as opposed to my custom rules, and it often happens before I even restart my comp. What can I do to ensure my settings save and/or make sure Norton stops crashing my OS while running uTorrent?

Welcome,

Is that a P2P site?

Thanks

uTorrent is a program I've installed on my computer, a bit torrent client that allows for peer to peer file sharing through the use of bit torrent files. www.utorrent.com probably has a better description than I can offer. Norton 360 recognizes it as a safe program.

Hi,
That recognition does not extend to the programs that the P2P networking allows you to share. This may be where the rub begins. I'm not a big fan of the practice since it does allow sharing of software that is not designed to be shared. At some point you may need to make a choice - protection or P2P shared files.

Stay well and surf safe

Any form of downloading can be used "to allow sharing of software that is not designed to be shared".

HTTP, FTP, even email.

It really has nothing to do with the protocol used, it's all in the content being shared.  I'm sure a lot more illegal software has been downloaded from http than peer to peer.

If you look at the help file for Norton's Download Intelligence you will see that it supports the following P2P clients

Limewire (P2P)
BitTorrent (P2P)
Thunder (P2P)
Vuze (P2P)
Bitcomet (P2P)
uTorrent (P2P)

I actually like using bittorrent to download huge files like different versions of Linux because you can throttle the download so your not killing your bandwidth, you can stop it and start it like a download manager and you never end up with a corrupted file.

Ironically, a lot of free and open source software is using peer to peer because if your giving software away for free you should not have to pay for bandwidth involved with giving away large programs.

Exactly. I'm using uTorrent to share large media files with multiple colleagues (I'm a film student). It's not related to the content I'm sharing. I think perhaps it's related to the traffic itself, because uTorrent outlines on its website how to add traffic and program rules to Norton Firewall in order to prevent these crashes. I'm implementing the rules, which helps temporarily, but Norton is resetting the settings to go back to their defaults. Even if I was using it for "software that isn't meant to be shared", I shouldn't have to choose between protecting my PC and utilizing a perfectly safe and legal program. It's not Norton's job, or anyone elses, to decide how I use my PC. I'm looking for a solution to my problem, not a dismissal of it based on your assumptions of what the program is being used for.

I'm using an older version, not that I think it matters.  But I was reluctant to update it because I thought the new versions are add sponsored or something.

So I have uTorrent 2.0.4

I'm also still using NIS 2012

But I never had to do a single thing in my firewall, since i'm using a router I forwarded the port being used and Norton automatically lets it work.

Maybe it's a conflicting rule or something?

Have you tried resetting the firewall back to the default rules?

Hello I have same problem on my laptops. Then i discuss the problem with one of my friend he suggest about techsupport house and give the contact address of this company. I contact with this company technical suppport team & they give the useful information for solving the problem

I tried resetting all my defaults last night, and so far it's been running for 12 hours with no interruptions. Hopefully it was just a weird setting or something. We'll see if this keeps working. Thanks!
