Shady pricing with Norton Automatic Renewal

I was recently notified that my subscription was about to expire. It expires January 20 2012. The email said Norton Automatic renewal would update my subscription on January 5 for $79.99. (Will my 15 days be included???) I went to my Norton Account to shut off the Automatic renewal and saw a special, so I clicked on it and found I could purchase My version of Norton 360 for $49.99. Why is it that my card would have been automatically charged $30.00 more if the actual price is less. I think this is a bit shady, guys. Beware of Auto Renewal, it charges you the premium rate, regardless of any special deals going on. How about automatically renewing my subscription at the price you are selling the software for?

Hi,

Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing. Basics first.

When you renew your subscription the remaining days will be included. If you purchase a new subscription you will get only the days of that subscription. Now the rest of the story.

Symantec/Norton has authorized resellers all over the world. They are allowed to sell the copies of the Norton products they purchase at any price they set. To keep peace in the family and the resellers happy Symaantec/Norton does not under sell its authorized partners.

As a consumer you are allowed to buy your subscription from Symantec/Norton or any of the authorized resellers. You can only get a renewal from Symantec/Norton. This means that you can take advantage of whatever sale you find, from a reliable reseller, to get your next year's protection. The only caution would be to wait until just a few days before your current subscription expires to install the new key.

Hope this helps

This is from a Symantec/Norton page, It is on My Account page. I don't see anything saying it is from anyone else. The only name on the page is Norton. FYI

Please contact Norton's OnLine Support via the CHAT route as below and ask them to honor the reduced price you see on your MyNortonAccount and they should do this. We have been told this officially and feedback from users is that they will do this if you ask. I know it's not as nice as automatically giving you  the lowest price when there are specials but I guess not many companies do that automaticaly.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

Feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Thank You for your help. I appreciate your recommendation, it worked and I will be able to renew at the special price.

Delighted to hear that it worked out as we hoped ....

Enjoy the holidays and practice safe computing ....
