Every year I purchase the latest version of NIS at Fry's (with their rebate package it is usually less than $10). We have 3 computers and I just install the new version when the old has about 2 days left. My current NIS 2010 works great and I have had no problems.
I looked at the new features of 2011 and really there is nothing there that I need, and I am very happy with NIS 2010.
I am concerned that there really is no reason for me to discard 2010; and I would always have the option of going to 2011 sometime in the future if I needed.
My question: Should I stay with 2010 (since it works so great) and just use the new 1 year subscription that came with NIS 2011, and can I do this just by adding my new key?
Hi Bww,
It is always recommended to upgrade to the newest version each year even if your old version is working great. Each year the engine and other underlying technology changes and much of this cannot be ported back into a prior year version. The signatures you receive on the old version is not the only important thing which provides protection for your computer, the program itself is also a very important piece of this.
As you might know, updating to the newest version does not affect your subscription at all. Any subscription days you have left gets carried over seamlessly to the new version.
I would highly recommend that you upgrade to NIS 2011.
You can download the full version of NIS 2011 from here and install over the top of NIS 2010.Please note that this is the English version, please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide another link.
As a precaution you can back up your Identity Safe by following the procedure here.
Then install NIS 2011 over the top of NIS 2010. Once 2011 is installed please run live update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.
Though the 2011 product key can be used to activate 2010 I would still recommend to do the upgrade.
Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
Allen
I strongly suggest you follow AllenM's suggestion.

I think there will not be any problem in activating the 2010 product using the 2011 Product Key. Try activating it and let us know the result.

Thanks for the replies;
You guys have convinced me. I will be doing the upgrade like I have every year. Even though I get the cd/dvd I always use the latest download to install.
Hi Bww,
You are most welcome.
Best wishes.
