Since the new UI for Norton360 the Silent Mode feature seems to have disappeared. It was in the context menu for the Norton360 icon in the system tray but it’s not there any more.
I can’t find it anywhere in the main program. The so-called support here: Turn Silent Mode on or off
does not match the new UI.
Does anyone know how to turn Silent Mode on and off?
No I haven’t tried that. Who thought it would be a good idea to change the name of the feature, not telling subscribers and not change the the ‘support’ page about Silent Mode? The smart Norton people who do this really need to be a bit smarter.
@bjm: But Mute Notifications is not really the same as Silent Mode, is it? Silent Mode alos suspended NAV background activities. This was crucial to me. I am seriously considering ditching NAV after almost 20 years of loyal use.
I want something sleek and easily customisable. Not a hugely seemingly interfering bloat app like this update…
Oh!? okay…it’s not the same?
You’re reporting Mute Notifications does not suspend background activities.
What background activities run during Mute Notifications?
I don’t know exactly what the difference in background processes between these versions is. But the new version left my digital audio workstation with frequent cpu spikes, rendering it rather useless. So yesterday I uninstalled NAV. And the cpu spikes disappeared, everything is back to as it was before the update.
So I have ditched Norton, after 20 years. I am using ESET now, which is much more customisable and doesn’t generate the cpu spikes in my DAW.
I wish I could get my money back on NAV, since I just paid for another year, which I cannot use due to this bloated update.

So the new Norton 360 UI has no Silent Mode (or Quiet mode for adding programs to run uninterrupted).
At this point are there any functional solutions to keep Norton background processes from running while my backup Apps (etc) are running?
Or has Norton gone the way of MS and just forces whatever interface they choose at us?
So far, nothing. Note the way the helpers are quick to give links to refunds, rather than admit that the “mute notifications” does not turn off any background processes that might have been causing the spikes.
I also have stuttering in games that use a borderless window, as they are not fullscreen.
MSFS 2020 (Microsoft Flight SIm) especially, as it is not possible to run it in true fullscreen — it only runs in a borderless window. It’s also not possible to add the program/app to any list in Norton, as the .exe file is buried in a protected encrypted folder the user has no permission to view !!
I go into settings and disable as much as I can for a couple of hours until I finish on the game.
The topic of this thread is “Silent Mode”, not “silence notifications”.
We know you think that muting notifications is the same, it is not. I can watch Norton taking up from 1.2 to 4% of my processes during a full-screen game. I can see it causing spikes as well,
Please just give up trying to convince us it’s the same thing.
And do you think I don’t know about hiding/unhiding system files & folders? I’m over 60 and have had windows since DOS and before 3. Stop treating everyone like a noob.
Topic is from Oct 2024
Silent Mode was v22 as I recall.
Are you running v22?
Okay. Thanks for keeping me honest.
I’ve seldom used Silent Mode or Silence all notifications.
Okay. They’re not the same.
I’ll try to remember that @You_Forgot_My_Login knows about unhiding system files/folder… is over 60 and had Windows since DOS and before 3.
What files are buried?
Are Microsoft Flight Sim files buried in a protected encrypted folder the user has no permission to view?
I’m not familiar with Microsoft Flight Sim.
Silent Mode stopped all Norton background tasks. It was simple to turn on - right-click the Norton icon in the System Tray, choose Silent Mode, choose how long for.
