Hello @EricW
have you tried → Mute Notifications

Hi EricW,

As far as I can see, all Silent Mode functionality has been removed in version 24.

bjm has been asking everyone to try muting notifications all over the forum but this does not disable background tasks, or allow selections of programs that disable background activity.

Norton has been taking over my system every morning, maxing out the CPU at the most critical time of day so I am on the verge of pulling the plug after nearly 40 years (truly) with the brand.

Does anyone have any real solutions?

Hello. You are correct, there isn’t a silent mode setting in the 24.xx release in its current form. That feature MAY or may not be reintroduced in a future update and we are all hoping it is.

Edited: The best I can offer is changing the scans settings to prevent over the top scan sessions when Norton has the notion they need to run. Use your mouse and go to the general area where the arrow on the right is. A cog icon will appear when you hover there. I cannot get it to remain open for a screenshot unfortunately.

My sincere apologies.
Thanks for confirming Mute…does not disable background tasks.

What background tasks do you see running?
What specifically do you want to stop running?

@SoulAsylum as I recall turned off VPN service.

v22 as I recall had backgrounds tasks running in the background.

Mute…was what I found…so, I offer Mute.

Where did I put my v24 User Guide?
Oh wait…Norton did not publish v24 User Guide

Thank you, @bjm and @SoulAsylum for taking the time to respond and for your help!

Norton seems to be running LiveUpdate in the background - and scanning for “critical updates” to installed software. I spend almost all my time working in virtual machines - Windows is just a hosting environment so presumably, Norton is not detecting virtual machine user activity as an indication of busy-ness and doing whatever the hell it likes. For my particular use, LiveUpdate starts running not long after machine start-up, coinciding almost perfectly with my daily morning video conference - and making me look more the fool than I usually am. It throttles my CPU and can’t be stopped.

I have disabled automatic updates to Norton - but this is hardly a solution with any longevity so I will be moving to another antivirus/firewall package as soon as I have evaluated my options.

Because Norton have not indicated that Silent Mode has been removed from any of their documentation, I can only assume that there is no intention to reintroduce it in the new version - does that sound reasonable?

I also believe these two are the major culprits regarding over stimulus of background tasks. I my first screenshot there are schedule tasks in Windows Task Scheduler that can be disabled. That may help you since Norton is reactive to the VM environment while you are using it.

Norton WSC proxy: 2nd screenshot

This proxy service is responsible for ALL the background streaming for virus definitions updates. It also runs with the VPN service in Norton. Therefore I have the Norton VPN service in Windows services set to startup type of manual. It then doesn’t load with Windows at boot hogging resources that should otherwise be free. Please feel free to make this change your side and see if there are any positive results for you.

We Gurus are just trying to offer workarounds as solutions until such time as Norton provides us with permanent ones.

So the new Norton 360 v24 UI has no Silent Mode (or Quiet mode for adding programs to run uninterrupted).
At this point are there any functional solutions to keep Norton background processes from running while my backup Apps (etc) are running?

(other than setting All auto updates OFF and Disabling Auto Protect and Firewall or even getting another security app)

Please can we have a statement from Norton about support for this feature. Quiet Mode is an Essential Feature!

I also had Quiet Mode setup in previous versions, as previously Norton was interfering with my backups causing them to fail. Now I’m on version 25.1 and the only option I can see at present is to temporarily disable Norton each time I run a backup. Honestly, very disappointing!

Thanks!
