With outbound e-mail scanning on, it is taking up to a minute to send an e-mail to one receipient using Norton Internet Security 2010. Needless to say, when there are multiple addresses, the wait is unbearable. This is not happening with Outlook 2007. Windows Live Mail (mail provider is comcast) is using port 587 as its outbound port, this change was required by comcast awhile back. Outlook is also using port 587 outbound.
I can turn off the outbound e-mail scanning, but Norton throws a fit and insists I turn things back on.
If your ISP prohibits you from using port 25 to send email then you really should turn off outbound email scanning in NIS, as you have tried. Norton's email scanner does not support any port use other than port 25. To stop Norton from complaining when you turn off outbound scanning open Norton's main interface and hover your mouse over the letter "i" to the right of the Email Protection On/Off toggle button. This will bring up a pop up with a button labled "Ignore." Clicking this tells Norton to ignore, or disregard, your email scanner setting when alerting you to the status of your NIS program. You can then leave outbound scanning disabled and Norton will no longer keep reminding you of that fact.
Thanks for the info. However, I don't see anywhere on the main Norton screen or anything under "settings" where a mouseover action is bringing any option up to ignore the fact that I have turned off outbound e-mail scanning (I am also getting nagged about not backing up my data - as I have another product that does that).
Version info from help/about (am I running 2009 or 2010)?
I believe you have posted in the wrong section. Based on the information you have given and the backup nagging, I'm pretty sure you that have Norton 360 version 3.
You should upgrade to version 4 for free as entitlted to with a current valid subscription and see if the issue is resolved.
I agree with Mitka as long as your Norton product is not provided by your ISP (Comcast). I'm wondering if you have Norton Security Suite 3.8.0.41 from Comcast.
Please let us know your product information in detail so that we will be able to provide you the appropriate advice.
The product was supplied by Comcast so I can't upgrade on my own. The main screen reads "Norton Security Suite" and on the bottom a "Norton from Symantec Provided by Comcast" displays.

Thanks for the screenshot. This is Norton 360 for Comcast and most likely version 3. This post is in the wrong section.
Please not that I am unable to help you with this program but I'll still give some suggestions. Members of the Norton 360 section will be better suited.
If you have a Comcast serial, you can try downloading the latest nomal version and use that serial to activate it. I suspect it would.
SendofJive mentioned that Norton doesn't allow scanning of other ports other than 25.
