Slow, slow, slow

I switched from idle time scan to scheduled scan because NAV was interrupting my work.  I set my scan to start at 1AM.  Now everythime it runs it is only about half done after five or six hours.  It effectively stops my ability to work.  When stopping the scan the computer locks up.  I can not even get to the task manager.  Today it took over an hour just to get the program shut down so I could do work.  This is unacceptable.

Is there a solution othen than uninstalling NAV and switching to a competitor?

A second item, why does Norton not have any way to just send an email.  When I try to use the form it gives me a limited selection of options and keeps sending me back to the knowledge base even though the knowledge base does not produce an answer on any number of searches.

Two hours wasted today trying to work through this and still not answer.  How do yo stay in business?

Desktop - not a laptop.  Dell Optiplex 745.  4 GB memory, 250G hard drive.  Intel Core 2.  This is not a computer setting.  Letting NAV run in the backgrond still slows things down unacceptably.  I need to multi task and have Outlook, Word, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Excel and sometimes something else open as well.

Why should it take six or more hours to scan my drive.  It seems that a scan started at 1AM should be done by 7AM.  In the last three years NAV has found only a tracking cookie as my email is scanned before it gets to my server.

I have been a Norton uses since DOS days, but my loyalty to a company that does not provide easy direct contact and produces a product that interferes with my work is seriously challenged.

Wow, cool system.  Anyway, how did you get NAV2009 on the system?  Did you over install NAV2008 per chance?  Uninstall NAV2008 first or just installed on top of?  Any priority chances in task manager?  Just trying to get more information for the situation.  Thanks.

If so a clean install would be better. Besides that. Do you have any otehr security software installed?

Before you get caught up in uninstalling/reinstalling (which might well be a deadend, as I see no link relating installation style and slowdowns), try the following:

1.  Open the NAV console

2.  Click on settings

3.  Turn Compressed File scan to OFF (don't worry; we won't leave it this way).

4.  Click on Exclusions>Scan Exclusions>Configure

5.  Make sure that it contains the exclusion:  \System Volume Information\

If it doesn't, please add that to the list.

6.  Click Apply and Okay and work your way out of the console.

7.  See if this helps with scan length time.

If it does, return to the Settings and ...

1.  Turn Compressed File scan to ON

2.   Remove infected files I recommend be ON

3.  Limit Data Extraction should be ON

4.  See what impact this has.

If scans are now manageable, leave it at this setting; if not, report back to us on what has happened for whichever of the above you tried.

From the way things sound you have a lightning fast computer and this should not be happening to you. You should probably reinstall NAV, fully update it, and lastly go through each part of the NAV settings to customize it just the way you want. When you are at this step I am thinking you should simply turn off both the idle and scheduled scans. Personally, I only run occasional quick scans before logging in to sensitive accounts to get rid of tracking cookies and then I only initiate full system scans when I am leaving the house and I know I can give it a good hour to finish. From the way your computer sounds even with compressed file scan turned on a full system scan shouldn’t take anymore than an hour to complete for you.

I am in full agreement with Pexley. The user’s system is plenty good.  Norton Antivirus should have no noticeable impact on it. The fact that these issues exist indicate that there is something wrong with Norton, whether it be conflicting software, malware, or a corrupt installation.    I have not had to limit any of the scanning settings on my system which is fairly equivalent. Until the user chooses to get back and provide us with more details on his system and what he has done so far to deal with the problem, there is not a lot of solutions to offer.

Right now I am in the middle of a large project, so I don't have time to fuss with Norton.  I will give your suggestions a try and see if that helps.  In the mean time I will turn off the automatic scans and do it manually.  Once I work this through I will report back.

Thanks for the suggestions.
