SMS Anti-Theft features of Norton Mobile Security

I do not want to use the remote scream/lock/wipe by sending an SMS message from another phone.  Is there any other way to activate the features from Norton Anti-Theft website?

I have tried to activate the features by sending an SMS from my gmail accout, but that does not work either.

I prefer to do things from my computer or my equipment.  I do not like the "buddy" feature!

Are there no other options for activating the features?

Please ignore my posting "lock" earlier.  I am refering to scream and locate features which should also be available on the anti-theft website.

Hi mchstream

Welcome to the Norton Community:smileyhappy:

To activate the Norton Mobile Security application  commands you can only

use SMS. The command being Scream, Lock, Locate, Wipe and Unlock.

These features or commands cannot be activated by email ,phone based

SMS only and  not web based SMS .

If you add or install  the Norton Anti-theft Plugin app which is addon for NMS

you will then be given the ability to Lock and Locate your phone using the Web.

At the moment using the NAT website  you can only Lock the device and send

a messaage to be displayed on the locked device screen  and also Locate the

device via Google Maps if the device has Use Wireless Networks and or the

GPS activated or take a Sneak Peek photo  using the front facing camera.

Some usefull links for you the first being the addon app for NMS which is

Norton Anti-theft Pugin from the Android Market-

Norton Anti-Theft Plugin App for NMS

If you have a valid license of Norton Mobile Security 2.5 you can download this

addon for NMS and activate thru the NMS app when NAT is installed and follow the

instructions on registering the device using your Norton Account details if you do not

have a Norton Account you can create one when registering NAT.

More info is in this link to the Norton Mobile Knowledge Base Forum on using

NAT and NMS-

Norton Mobile Knowledge Base Forum

And this link is for the Norton Anti-Theft Website where you can login using your

Norton Account details-

Norton Anti-Theft Website

And the last link is for Norotn Mobile Products Support where you will find all the

info needed to install and use NAT on your Android device-

Norton Mobile Products Support

I hope this info helps you with some answers to your questions and assists you

with using the great  features of  NMS with the addon application Norton Anti-Theft

for Android.

Cheers:smileyhappy:

PS Maybe Symantec Norton might add the screan feature to the Norton Anti-theft

website in the future.?

Again, as i said originally, ALL these features should be available from your anti-theft website.  I do not like the "buddy" feature.  I prefer to use my own equipment, ie: home computer, to use the features for a product I purchased.  I hope you correct these features soon, which in my opionion are currently flawed.  I am a norton fan in general especially norton 360.

One last thing...why can't the features be activated by sending a SMS via my gmail account?

Hi mchstream.

Norton Mobile Security (NMS) is a different product from Norton Anti-Theft (NAT).  If you have NMS on a device then you should be able to install a free plugin for NMS which gives you free access to NAT features.  You can access the features of NAT via its website.  The features of the Anti-Theft portion of the fully paid NMS are only available via SMS messaging.

If you have not downloaded the NAT plugin for NMS via the Android market and activated that on your device then the features of NAT will not work with your device.  Might that be your problem?

If you do not like the buddy feature that should not matter as you do not have to use it.  The software will ask you to select a buddy if you set up the Anti-Theft features of NMS but if you never tell your chosen buddy and your phone never gets locked then there is no issue.  If ever your phone got locked and you forgot your password then you might be grateful for a buddy, many people have been.

Does any of that help?

P.S.  Just noted your latest post about using an SMS via gmail.  NMS Anti-Theft expects to receive messages by SMS.  If you send a so called SMS via an e-mail account your phone does not actually recognise it as a pure SMS message and so most so called SMS messages sent by e-mail will not work the features of NMS.  This is one of the main reasons why there are different products for phones (NMS) and tablets which do not normally have full phone features (Norton Tablet Security).

No this did not help at all.  It seems you did not read my post.  Please read it the reply.

I understand your preference, but unfortunately the NAT web portal doesn't have the same features yet as the SMS anti theft.  We will work to correct this, but I cannot give a date as to when that will occur.

I'm confused as to why you would consider the SMS anti theft feature flawed.  It's a feature that makes use of a different communication method and protocol.  It's intended to be used from other phones.

As to sending an SMS from gmail, the reason why it's not accepting this is that SMS via email is not supported.  When you send an email SMS the formatting of the message is modifed outside of the parameters of the SMS standard format.

I am sorry, you half answered my question.  But again, ALL Features of the PLUG IN and ANTI-THEFT features should be able to be done from home on the anti-theft website.  i.e scream.  Thank you anyway.

I apologize for any confusion.  I understand that you would like to use the same functions from the Web portal as that can be used via SMS.  As I mentioned in my previous post, as well as have been mentioned in other posts on this and the Norton AntiTheft board, this currently isn't possible.  We are working at correcting this in future revisions of the web portal, but I don't have a date as to when this will occur.

the faster you correct the better your product will be.  btw lookout features are easier to use in this regard. Scream definitely should be available on the web.

I agree wholeheartedly.  If I misplace my phone, I don't have another phone from which to text my misplaced phone.  When I bought Norton Mobile Security Lite and then downloaded this add-on, I thought that I could sign in online and send a message to my phone to "scream".  So, the product does not work well, or should I say conveniently.  When I recently set my phone down and could not find it, I learned quite quickly the limitations of "Scream".  This feature is very misleading.  I urge Norton to provide a web-based solution.
